Good morning.

Another crackerjack Hotspur’s Half Hour and our extra special this week is our latest foreign correspondent is @dnaphm who proudly files the Lilywhite flag in Ontario.

This week we get to grips with that Lazio game and the West Ham game. Which means we give Mr Herbert a small shoeing as well as reflect upon the sad, lonely and desperately unwashed racists that seem to have come crawling out of the woodwork now the nights are drawing in.

The musical arrangements from the our resident one man house band Mr Loveridge will blow you cyber socks off and they pay tribute to Jermain Defoe and Jake Livermore.

Guest spots for future shows are still available so come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough.

There aren’t many Spurs fans in Bristol. And whenever we do happen upon other Spurs fans we huddle together like the survivors of an apocalypse.

So this Podcast is the only dedicated Spurs talk that isn’t tarnished by other fans or biased media that I have.

    Anyway. Bad points:

Jan at LB – disaster, that little boy skinned him EVERY single time.
Bale not helping out defensively again
Gallas – terrible performance, ball watching, hoofing, conceding possession, totally out of sorts
Sandro – worst game in a while, lost most of his challenges, misplaced most of his passes
Dempsey – was Sunday a one-off? Was this the real Dempsey back again?
Dembele – can pivot and swivel and come out of tight spots a la Le Rat but I don’t think he has the passing ability nor vision
Sigurdsson – another cameo role – did he do anything
AVB – no reaction to a complete possession and territorial pasting over 85% of the match. Like for like subs and no discernible change in tactics at any point.

    Plus points:
Lennon’s work rate and diligence is grossly under-valued. Best player for us today.

Our tactics were good.Wewere hitting them on the counter in the first
In the second we were totally either inept at going forward or the tactics were to not go forward
Defoe did nothing you forgot to mention

    LLL Reply:

Ronnie, literally every attack went down our left channel. If you think that Jan was doing a good job there and that Bale was helping him out, could you explain why Liverpool kept targeting the position?

Sandro missed a lot of tackles, and gave the ball away cheaply on a number of occasions. Sad but TRUE!

Whether him and Dembele were powerful or not, I don’t think there is enough going on in midfield smarts-wise.

I don’t think our tactics were that good. We didn’t touch the ball for 5 minutes then scored on the break. Then we scored from a direct free kick. Apart from the goals I don’t remember much coherent attacking play for the whole game. You seem to think we were good in the first half and poor in the second. I think we were poor for most of the first half too. Liverpool bossed the game territorially but they are totally toothless. A lot of other teams would have punished our muddled, scrappy, directionless play and gormless defending / clearing. I fear.

Defoe did nothing I forgot to say. What’s the point? He wasn’t given anything to play with. If you don’t supply him he might as well not be on the pitch – nothing new there.

Bale was our best attacking player, but then he always is. I think Lennon, in terms of his overall contribution, was equally noteworthy. A lot of times he was the only player actively pressing, plus he got back a lot and provided a few moments of relief by receiving the ball and going forward intelligently. As I said, I think his diligence is under-valued – Enough said!

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

What I saw in the first half was Tottenham with speed and counter attacking well and attacking the space through Bale,Lennon,Jan and others.
I thought they had most possession in percentage, they had a good shspe but we made them totally lead footed with our pace.

We just didnt keep it up because we found ourselves 2 up and we got more conservative. They also closed their holes a bit more.
Instead of getting the ball up quickly in the second half and exploitede the space given we staretd this stupid lateral pass game that offered Liverpool the chance to close.
Also when we were under attack dawson (who played well defensively incidently)and company kept on giving the ball to the opposition.

    Thats what I saw.

If youwants to highlite a few mistimesd tackle etc so be it but we stopped exploiting them with our speed in the second.

    LLL Reply:

It’s not that I want to highlight a few mistimed tackles. We lost the midfield in the 2nd half and I don’t think we ever truly had it anyway. The few breaks we had were quick moves from one end to the other. You say that Dawson was guilty of giving away possession – but it’s not really his job to keep possession as a CB. He was hacking things away because too many things were flying into the box.

As I say, I really thought we played pretty poorly for the majority of the game, and perhaps if Liverpool weren’t so toothless we would have come out with a different result. But hey, 3 points is 3 points, they are on the board now and it sets us up well for the weekend, when hopefully we can play a little better.

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

I cant agree. With Dawson he hoofs it up or puts it into touch unnecessarily at times.

We were running rings around them in the first half.
Something changed in the second and my question is why????

    Was it our tactics???

Sandro and Dembele were not getting it forward and we were relying on Bale to do all the running
They had less to deal with because of it

I thought it was the tacics had changed but who knows.

    Lordy Reply:

Agree about Lennon he works harder than people think, for me Galla shouldn’t be in the team although he nicked one right off the foot of Suarez late on. For all Dawsons faults I like having a “proper” defender in there although when Kaboul and Benny come back I’d drop him. Bale is head and shoulders above anything we have or have had for a while he’s truly world class and in more than one game this year I just watch and think how ordinary we will be without him. Walkers best game since last season. Sandros worst game yes but lately he’s been doing more than his fair share , Parker wouldn’t get in my starting 11. We need a really big January but I don’t see it coming Levy needs to back his backward plan to give it any hope of working

    [Reply]

    david Reply:

They said Bale’s goal was deflected but on TV highlights I think it just swerved and totally wrong footed the Pool keeper.
He took a couple of other free kicks today and last Sunday which also dipped and swerved all over the place.
    Very useful weapon to have.

And for our first goal Bale left Gerrard and Johnson for dead before going past another 2 Liverpool players and putting it on a plate for Lennon to score.
Funniest thing was once Bale went past Johnson he just fell to the floor, presumably because he thought trying to catch Bale was a waste of time.

I’m feeling like we lost-but last season’s battering apart, most of our recent games against the Pool have been flakey, but Lordy I guess won’t recall them. So 2-1, injury time winner by Lennon-2-1 Bassong and BAE’s first ever 2-1 Carragher og, and Pav’s 1st after a battering-tonight was bugger all to do with tactics, it was abut players hoofing the flippin’ ball anywhere-I say anywhere?, anywhere but to another bloke in a white shirt that is? PS Welcome back Walker-Starman.. Arron the atom Lennon

    LLL Reply:

Agree that Thudd wouldn’t have worked well today with Sandro off-colour. Although Dempsey’s contribution (aside for the dive for the free kick) was again negligible so perhaps our dream team of Sandro, Thudd, Dembele would have been more useful.

Either way, we scraped a fortuitous win, not for the first time this season. 5th place after 15 games, above Arsenal and still looking distinctly incoherent on the field. Could be worse I suppose!

    Essexian76 Reply:

all balances up as I see it-should’ve beaten or drew against Newscast-it’s football-sometimes the ball goes for you-others it doesn’t,but you cannot play our best CB at LB without creating a problem for yourself-and until Benny and Kaboul are back-we’ll be exposed on the left side and vunerable in the core of defence-Key players you see?

    [Reply]

    Hartley Reply:

and when they are back, we’ll have the strongest defence in Europe…..

    Essexian76 Reply:

I’d like to think so, but in AVB’s defence-he’s having to juggle players constantly-putting rounds where squares should go ,and we’re looking at it and saying Gallas this or Dawson’s that-Tom’s slow blah blah, but 2 games a week, every flippin’ week what the fcuk do we expect?

    LLL Reply:

Thing is, a lot of teams are playing the same amount of games and we’re not really changing our attacking players from game to game so it shouldn’t be an excuse for the lack of coherence in the way we are playing. Well, it could be part of the reason but there’s obviously more to it.

I don’t have a problem with Dawson. Gallas was certainly this or that though today, and in fact perhaps has run out of premier league steam?

    Essexian76 Reply:

How can we? Defoe tonight got zero supply, you were there and saw it for yourself, but just whacking the ball upfield and the amount of times possession was just handed to them was doing my noddle in. Lenno was really motoring, but time and time again the outball was pathetic-don’t mind counter attacking but you do have to pass to a team-mate I’d have thought

    LLL Reply:

My point was that we aren’t changing our attacking players and yet we aren’t seeing much ‘gelling’ going on between them – hence my point about Bale playing the ‘one man wrecking ball’ role.

The hoofing and panicked clearances was weird today. There was a bit of a lack of movement and showing for a pass, but some of it you just have to put it down to clueless play. At least a couple of times we won a free kick late on in the 2nd half, and instead of playing it short and trying to keep possession, whoever it was who took it elected to hoof a cross-field ball over to a heavily marked Lennon or Defoe! I mean what the fcuking fcuk??!

    Essexian76 Reply:

Yeah, what the fcukin’ fcuk indeed

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

Dont take fcukin’ fcuk lightly. Its the short passes that killed us in the second (well didnt kill us) They got back behind the ball and covered and we lost our edge of the first half.

Every time we try to play like Barca we look more stupid than any other team that has ever played the game.

The ball goes laterally across the field from one player to the centre ,to to other side and back maybe 3 times. As soon as there is pressure it goes back, then laterally there, then more pressure and eventually Dawson gets it or someone else and they kick it up to them.

It doesnt work for us.What works for us is a quick counter after the other team has attacked and our pace klilling them.

    Essexian76 Reply:

Well that wa sort of what I was hinting at-against Wesssss-Taymmmm-We had Hudd spraying it about, knocking 3-60 and 70 yarders to all areas, whicg opened them up on countless occasions-but yesterday-it tiptoe through the midfield-which them became a minefield-so the ball was constantly getting lost and pressure came right back onto the defence-to simply whacked it up to mid-who promptly lost again-perhaps it was because Sandro simply ran out of puff-I dont know?

  • Frontwheel 2 Says:

One thing that bothers me is how we are now so reliant on Bale as a one man attack. Yes, we lost Modric, but he was not a goal scoring or assisting player anyway. Bale is playing well obviously but at times it looks like he really knows he is that much better and will try and take on the whole opposition as he doesn’t trust anyone else with a pass here or there. There just isn’t much cohesion in the attack.

I guess that was a ploy to get closer to Defoe and Dempsey, but yes, and it has been a feature in other games. Bale has been more effective tucking in this season but asking Lennon to come inside reduces his attacking game…

ziege was quite handy wasn’t he,i thought ziegler was going to do it but he never,i can’t believe we have no capable younguns knocking about

    LosLorenzo Reply:

Reto wasn’t quite ready when we had him, but he seems to have come good in the last few years. He was only 18 when we bought him, and 21 when we sold.

Not a world-beater exactly, but good enough that italian champions Juve bought him. They’ve sent him out on loan to Lok. Moscow, but that’s not too damning when you consider that they also have Padoin, De Ceglie and Caceres to choose between at LB and a number of other good LM’s. He’s also a regular for Switzerland, who’ve got a pretty strong team these days.

Not that I’m suggesting we should take him back, or should have kept him. But he’s become a decent enough LB.

    LosLorenzo Reply:

What ever happened to that young Welsh bloke with the big ears, that we bought to replace Reto at left back?

    kojac Reply:

haha, thats true where did bale go,put him back at left back

    kojac Reply:

and yes reto did make it in the italian league didn’t he,i thought i saw him at sampdoria once too,i think we could have kept him, lefties are always useful to have if they are even half deecent

Man U weren’t very good last night, but you just know they are not going to concede. If they are behind they seem to have a Ferrari gear box to call on. But just another win for them, and unlike us it never seems to be in doubt. I wonder if you examined the stress level of the average Spurs fan against the average Utd. fan during a match the spikes on our charts would look like The Rocky Mountain Range and theirs would look like Skeggy beach in comparison. I can’t help but admire them and wish a bit of it would rub off on us.

rooney and hernandez upfront work their socks off for the team,we jsut don’t have players like that unfortunately

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

Our players work their socks off but United have been a force to reckon with since the rebuilding in the early sixties. They are a powerhouse club with depth and halls of success.
One of the reasons is the greatest manager in the history of the English game.
Ok so this year they didn’t spend much but they did buy the top goalscorer in the league.
    The difference is the manager.
But he is different than most managers.
Thats why the fans have trust

    [Reply]

    Boy Charioteer Reply:

That’s right Ronnie. Also when they are going for the jugular at the end of a match the defending team gets ever more desperate and the lunges become more reckless and the tackles more with the potential to lose the game. It’s no coincidence that the number of refereeing decisions go their way. I don’t think there is any great refereeing conspiracy to help them win, I just think that the very nature of their style of play forces defenders to be reckless and it appears (groundlessly to me) that the refs are biased towards them. Bad decisions against us at OT notwithstanding!

    [Reply]

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

Yes they dig deep. They have a long and strong history and its obvious that Fergie imparts that to every player that comes to United. When he tells them what he expects there cannot be any question in their minds. They believe it.

Harry Redknapp it seems let his team play, gave them the confidence in themselves but never gave them the tools to cope when there was a problem. It was left to VDV and Bale to use their own desire to make that happen.

AVB and Wenger seem thinkers. Its more about getting back to the plan.

Fergie has it all.He is gives them the best of everything and has the history of United to fall back onto

1986-1991, won bugger all-spent a fortune-got lucky in the FA cup, but his board stayed with him despite the media howling for him to be sacked. Unlike Auntie Whinger-he didn’t inherit an established and brutal back four to build success upon (doesn’t it appear strange that since the last of the English defenders retired-they’ve won nothing?) SAF can always spend big if required, we can’t-we have to build with frugality and caution-massive difference, and fraught with the likehood we’ll lose our better players is success isn’t forthcoming and by success, I don’t mean the LC or Europa League-they mean nothing, case in point was losing Berbatov and Keane in 2008

Therefore last nights result was first class..Get Adebayor in for Deuce , Demebele gets his match fitness tuned in , Ka-Booom , Benny and Parker to return..plus any signings in January…things are looking not too shoddy all in all…I think we can be content with the seasons work to date.
