Good morning.

A grim start to proceedings then as we woke to the news that the inherently racist Lazio Ultras greeted Tottenham fans in the Drunken Ship public house Rome at about 0130hrs this morning in the traditional manner; battering and cutting them.

100 armed Ultras attacked leaving a current count of seven Spurs fans wounded and two stabbed.

The Italians baring Lazio colours wielded baseball bats, knuckledusters and knives. Some wore helmets. The police and fire service attended the scene and whilst arrests were made, many of the cowards involved fled. Italian media suggests that CCTV fotage of Campo de ‘Fiori is being examined.

To be honest I’d demand the game to be called off to emphasise to the powers that be that this sort of thing won’t be tolerated. I didn’t think my contempt for UEFA could increase but no, this has don’t it. There is too much money in the competition for excuses anymore. Fans must be protected.

The latest Spurs podcast is out now, folks!

Actually what Herbert and people like the comedy stooge from Cheatski have done is to divert attention and focus from the real and quite grave issues of violence and personal abuse.

Administratively the Y-word issue is seen as an easier fix. Nobody gets stabbed, beaten up or specifically abused by it (ironically many enjoy it’s Call to Arms nature as well described by somebody yesterday) but nevertheless the administrators and the like say why not flex their muscles. It is easy. Like pushing a protestor to the floor.

These people would be better employed channeling their efforts into forcing the relevant authorities to withdraw any team which cannot safeguard supporters in AND around the ground.

Re-inforce it in this case by calling for the FA to ban any signing of foreign players, managers or coaches from countries where fascist, racist or violent behaviour is proven.

    Hot_Spur Reply:

Do you think you should be held responsible for something that happens outside the boundaries of your property? Also, has it been proved that they are in fact Lazio supporters and not just thugs using football as an excuse? Or even fans of a rival club trying to get Lazio into trouble?

    SpurredoninDubblin Reply:

    @papa.

Why can’t Lazio be held responsible for their fans? Other clubs are held responsible for their fans whether they are racists or just hooligans.

Recalling the game at WHL, surely the irony was not lost, that this was a team with Black players, and every time Lennon got the ball, they started to spout their racist filth.

Racism has made the headlines quite a bit in football recently, with players quick (and quite rightly too) to claim they have been racially abused, but when their own fans are abusing the opposition, they keep quiet about that. There are times when I think that these are the sort of people who would only scream rape, after the cheque has bounced.

    PapaSpurs Reply:

Ca’t reply to your reply so I’m replying here. This is not about me or my property and there is a world of difference. People are being murdered for fuck’s sake – It doesn’t matter if it is other fans or just thugs causing the problem, if you ban one club then they will pay attention and attempt to sort it out even it it’s not their fans, if it happens again you ban the country (like they did to us). It is a much wider problem across the whole of Italian football (and society to some extent) and taking what you may consider unfair action WILL SAVE LIVES. BTW, I love visiting Italy and have nothing against them as a nation, but remember we’re only 60 odd years on from Mussolini and his descendants still attend Lazio games.

    ELELEL Reply:

It’s a police issue. Quite simple, if it happens in the ground it’s a club issue – and a police one if actual crimes take place. But let’s say a football fan watches a game and goes home and murders his wife. Extreme example but same applies – not in the club’s jurisdiction.

I agree that Italian football has major issues. So what should be happening is that UEFA and the other bodies should be slamming them extremely hard on anything which does fall into their authority.

    [Reply]

    Essexian76 Reply:

Italian football should be banned regardless of this incident anyway-Firstly because of the Ultra’s, secondly because of the continued racism, thirdly because of the corruption, and lastly because it’s not safe for any fans visiting the country to watch games without assaults happening on a regular basis-if this was an isolated incident, you’d have a point-it’s not and everything I’ve mentioned are civil acts not solely football related.

    ELELEL Reply:

My only point was in agreement with Hot spur that crimes outside a football ground and separate from matches are police issues. As I said, there are lots of issues with Italian football, and more needs to be done, won’t argue with that. But it’s a separate argument to the simple point of law.

    Hot_Spur Reply:

PapaSpurs – Of course I wouldn’t want murders to continue but it has to be dealt with in the right way and by the RIGHT authorities which in this case is the police, NOT football organizations. Inside stadiums is a different matter, the streets are the police responsibility.

Normally, I wouldn’t dispute that idea, but I have a bad feeling about tonight, especially if we go ahead of them.

It was suggested years ago after a Spain-England game, that players be taken off the pitch if there were racist chants, with the ref having the ultimate sanction to abandon the game and award it to the victims 3-0 if it continued. Uefa were supposed to be considering this, but the suspicion is that they “bottled it”, worrying about the possibility of a riot. So what., Just keep stepping up the penalties I say. And eventually, when they are playing in Serie Z, they will get the message.

I just hope those injured get better soon but I’ll be amazed if UEFA take action that’s relative to the crime.

    [Reply]

    PapaSpurs Reply:

Banning had much less to do with football hooliganism being greatly reduced in the UK than CCTV, better policing and ecstasy. Unfortunately, in Italy, many clubs are essentially run by their ‘Ultras’ who are incredibly powerful (have even taken a percentage of players wages, believe it or not.) CCTV everywhere, doubling (at least) of prices, a police force who are not corrupt / paid by / part of the ultras and UEFA growing a pair is the only way forward.

  • Hot_Spur Says:

UEFA and FIFA cannot take action against Lazio for something that happened outside their stadium. jolsgonemental Reply:

Yes. UEFA and FIFA have responsibility to football to ensure supporters are safe when going to see a match.

If the fans of a club make the local area a dangerous place for opposing fans, then they shouldnt be hosting matches.

    [Reply]

    Hot_Spur Reply:

“UEFA and FIFA have responsibility to football to ensure supporters are safe when going to see a match.” Inside stadiums yes but the streets are the Police responsibility to keep safe, not football organizations.

    [Reply]

    LosLorenzo Reply:

Nobody is suggesting that Lazio be tasked with policing the streets, or prosecuting these particular fans. THAT is obviously for the police to deal with.

With Lazio fans, though, this is hardly the first time. The club clearly have a widespread issue with the behaviour of their fans. Although they may not be responsible for the behaviour of individual fans outside of stadium, they are certainly in the best position to do something about the problem.

Lazio could hand out lifetime matchday bans to fans found to be participating in this kind of activity, inside or outside the stadium. They are certainly in a better position to reason with these fans than anyone else (police, UEFA, or whoever).

So you have a bunch of people identifying themselves as Lazio fans committing crimes. The club are not responsible for prosecutions and arrests. But if they owned a shred of decency, they most certainly should feel a responsibility to proactively avoid future incidents.

So why don’t they? Because there is no incentive for them to do so. Worst case (based on historical evidence, anyway), they might get a slap on the wrist from UEFA of a few thousand EUR. That’s a lot cheaper than genuinely trying to fix this problem, and doesn’t risk alienating their most rabidly racist ultras.

As for FIFA and UEFA not being responsible… According to the letter of the law, no they have no formal responsibility to deal with a case such as this. But formal responsibility and moral responsibility are two very different things. If the fact that UEFA earns a huge profit from these competitions doesn’t give them some moral responsibility for their direct consequences, then I don’t know what…

    Hot_Spur Reply:

LosLorenzo – yes you make some very valid points, Lazio could try to help, no denying that. My original post was largely in response to all those saying UEFA or FIFA as well as Lazio are responsible, but the fact is that they are no responsible. Doesn’t mean they can’t try to help though as you say.

    Essexian76 Reply:

Didn’t UEFA blanket ban all English clubs for 5 seasons? As wrong as it is, I don’t see how Lazio could do anything about it. I’d have thought that the responsibility would be the italian police.

If it happens in the stadium, kick them (lazio) out and ban them for years, but someone wearing a lazio shirt who stabs someone in a pub, not really lazio’s responsibility.

Having said that, rome / italy can be quite facist and lazio taking some form of positive action would be good, but never going to happen.

    [Reply]

    LosLorenzo Reply:

Lazio can ban whoever they want from their stadium, for whatever reasons they want (pretty much; ironically, they probably couldn’t ban someone for being a black lawyer, even under Italian law).

These hundred or so thugs, all in Lazio gear, attacking fans of the team who are going to play against Lazio tonight – whether the club like it or not, these people were “representing” the club.

So yeah, I think it would be completey reasonable to give a lifetime ban from Lazio games to all of the ultras arrested by the police, and any others proven to have taken part based on CCTV, etc.

But Lazio have no reason whatsoever to hand out these bans, because they have come to expect UEFA to act dumb and turn a blind eye to all this unpleasantness.

    [Reply]

    SpurredoninDubblin Reply:

Just to add to what you have said, the analogy is with a publican who lets his customers drink until they are incapable, and then waves them off as they drive home. Publicans have suffered loss of license for this.

Can you imagine if we were chanting “Nigger” every time a black player touched a ball, what the FA might do. This would no doubt lead to squads of undercover stewards sitting in the stands ready to grab the offenders.

The real issue is not that it happened outside the ground, but that Lazio does nothing to stop related behaviour in their own ground.

It is effectively a parental matter. If any of us were parents, how many would claim when their kids were nicked for hooliganism, that it is nothing to do with us because it happened outside our home? The parents are expected to set an example.

Sounds about right, over the years I’ve traveled quite a lot to watch Spurs in Europe, and from getting hospitalized in Rotterdam to getting banged up in Bucharest, the worse I’ve witnessed is easily the game in Seville a while back-and that was 100% down to and caused by the police-I wouldn’t trust either the Spanish or Italian police as far as I could lob a baton back at them.

    [Reply]

    Alspur Reply:

I was there – that was just the police out to batter Spurs fans, no Seville fans were involved as far as I recall…

Nazis or Fascists in police uniforms is nothing new. We have had our fair share as well. Corruption? Hillsborough screams out not only for justice or retribution but also a complete change of direction for our police forces when it comes to tackling institutional racism or endemic corruption, which has clearly failed over the last 20 years. If we have such a stigma in dealing with corruption in the police in this country I absolutely shudder to think how it will ever be dealt with in Rome. Justice for our fans? I would not at all be surprised if the Italian authorities accused our fans of inflaming the situation by drinking their cappuccinos from the wrong side of the cup.

This is the worst comment you have ever made, you are usually spot on.

He never played that role in Fulham. He was either the sole striker or the left mid. He didn’t have mids and defenders hoofing the ball to him there. His defending was outstanding when he played out on the left.

Just like Defoe, and every other quality attacker, he needs the ball played to his feet. Our CMs are completely incapable of doing that.

Walker did ok for me, better performance tonight, but generally woeful. Anybody who thinks this mob is an improvement on last season is an idiot. Just compare this europa league group campaign with the champions league group campaign, yes we did have modric then but no adebayor, verthongen and dembele. Poor again, this cant go on for much longer.

On a positive note, I would like to commend Caulker and Naughton for outstanding matches. I watched most of their matches last season and they had some bright moments, but for both of them, this was by far their strongest matches at this level.

Naughton put up a wall at midfield and forced Lazio to attack the much weaker Walker (who had his best match of the season but was still lacking).

Sorry ODM I have to disagree, how will a decent striker change anything if we play one up front? What striker will we get that’s any good with our budget?

Moutinho is a ball winning defensive midfielder, him and sandro may shore up our defence but we need a playmaker in the pirlo mould to sort our offensive/link up play. Again how will we get a world class player for the money we have to spend?

I really hope AVB can turn us round but he seems too cerebral for our dimwitted squad, they appear to not understand his basic pattern of play/tactics and in the main play like strangers despite having played together for years.

If he loses the next two or three badly I reckon levy will dump him and we’ll have the pleat show again

    [Reply]

    half_baked_spuds Reply:

you mean avb actually has tactics? pray tell what are they?

    onedavemackay Reply:

Levy wants a long term solution not a short term fix. If you don’t think AVB is any good fair enough but unless he’s given time we’ll never really know.

From what I understand AVB expects players to be more expansive. So Lloris is a goalkeeper and a sweeper and Dembele is a defensive and attacking midfielder. Vertonghen is typical in being a total footballer – comfortable anywhere on the pitch.

It’s a big change he needs time

    jfdit Reply:

hasn’t levy always had a 5 year plan?

I didn’t say AVB wasn’t good enough, I said the players lack the intelligence to comprehend what he’s trying to do

another possible view is the levy/lewis business plan is a busted flush and we’ve got a ‘yes’ man to oversee the balancing books era due to our CL wage bill being out of sync with our non CL turnover.

I said when we appointed AVB he may be the next cloughie but by the same token he may just be another santini, we’ll see soon enough

Ddoris had his best game for us on the one hand but on the other, the fact that he was probably man of the match, tells another, less attractive story, regarding our ongoing lack of edge up front but I won’t bore you. Walker, after a couple of dodgy moments early in the first half, settle nicely into the job well for the rest of the match I thought. Back line were generally fairly solid and the midfield held and passed the ball well for the first half but we went back into punt it up field a little too much second half. Given that lazio could have won it 3 or 4 nil but for their profligacy it’s ironic that the only goal scored was, according to two commentators, wrongly called offside. Did Defoe or Dempsey have a shot? I honestly can’t remember.
Good to see positive & early substitutes. Also good to see Carroll looking the part.

  • East Stand Says:

The next few games and XMas will really test the whole AVB/board relationship despite whatever the good will is so far. With January coming up as the only chance to improve the team, Levy may be forced to look at the situation then if things are still this crappy.

I back AVB, i want him to work out and he needs some players back yet but the coming period is becoming crucial for him and our season. Limping through to the knockout stage of the Europa league won’t fool anyone. This was a full strength side apart from the injured few. A good first 18mins at Arsenal and a smashing of a pub team at home does not suggest that we have turned any corner just yet, especially after tonight!! We cannot keep making the excuse about Dembele, Lazio and Wigan are not world beaters.

AVB needs time still but this tactical whizz-kid he was always supposed to be is nowhere to be seen at the moment. He needs to settle things down and get the team playing with some kind of flow or swagger. I don’t think we’ve done that much if at all so far this season and that is becoming a slight worry for me. That can start to become a lack of confidence and then you’re really stuffed…

Let’s hope we look much better against Wet Spam, if we don’t turn up against them then i will start to wonder if he’s the right man. Even if we lose we must look like we’re up for it and play like we aren’t shit scared at least. We needed to put in a performance against Reading away after some turgid performances and we did, so here’s hoping.

My only question is, why don’t we seem to be improving?

Yeah, Italy is a nice place to visit but quite a large part of the population are very insular and live in the dark ages compared to here. Pretty disorganised and corrupt too, bit like a watered down Serbia!!

    [Reply]

  • daytripper11 Says:

Today was the last straw for me with AVB. He has lost me. He made an undersized and recklessly over-aggressive defence look like world beaters.

Any half decent manager would have picked them apart with mid-range passes to runners sliding into the massive gaps their defenders were leaving open all match (like every other manager does to AVBs high line).

I am not seeing any tactical adjustments being made in any matches – especially on the attacking side.

I have been thinking that maybe AVB is only a defensive mind. But then no manager in football plays a high line without pressing the other teams midfielders.

Then today, I waited the entire second half for a simple defensive adjustment to prevent Lazio from attacking Walker, but he never made it. Their LM was by far their best attacking player and was their only player capable of getting the ball into the box. Yet he was left alone in space the entire second half. Even when the ball was already on that side of the pitch, where it should have been easy to roll Walker over to mark him.

    [Reply]

    LosLorenzo Reply:

Hard to claim Chelsea should be sanctioned for this one. They had a player (Ramires) who vehemently claimed, and probably earnestly believed, he heard Mark call a teammate “monkey”. Their only options were either to report it, or cover it up. The fact that they chose the first option is to their credit.

What they DIDN’T have to do was go out and immediately make the fact that they had reported an incident public. So they’re still c*nts, don’t worry. In fiarness, Clattenburg would be withing his rights to claim compensation for his ordeal from them, but he won’t for fear of ruining his career.

    [Reply]

    Boy Charioteer Reply:

Yes I understand it was off camera. The media pictures at the time appear to show Clattenberg in control of his faculties and acting quite calmly. Someone who did say “monkey” would be acting irrationally, raving and lost control. I can’t imagine any official in Clattenberg’s position calmly lecturing players and then throwing in a racist remark as an afterthought. I would have to be absolutely sure in my own mind that I had heard correctly, what with all the controversy raging around me. A man’s career could be in ruins because someone misheard something. Apparently everything now is going to be recorded so the situation shouldn’t happen again.

The Harry mob are happy AVB isn’t rocking the show and the AVB mob are trying to find any excuse they can dig out to defend him, Dembele, lack of quality signings etc etc.

AVB’s philosophy, methods whatever it is need to start kicking in now. There is an obvious lack of fluidity and cohesion, its there for all to see… I think he could be the right man long term but you don’t get time in football management unless you meet minimum expectations and at the moment that isn’t happening.

I will say though, the playmakers we have been linked with in the media for January could well show the root of the problem. Pranjic and Ericsson etc, Carroll is clearly in the team because he can play a pass or two and has some creativity and vision. He’s getting in ahead of J.D, Thudd, Guylfi etc now. We are clearly lacking in that department so the point that AVB doesn’t have the players to play his system properly may well hold some water. Dempsey and Sigudsson don’t fit in at all. May as well get rid in Jan rather than sacrifice Dawson, if we sign two creative players how the hell will they even get near the team then? They’re looking like square pegs already!!

    [Reply]

    Lordy Reply:

I’m not happy at all my beloved Spurs aren’t doing well and looking boring to boot. I really hope AVB turns it round and quickly because Levy to spare looking like he has egg on his face will not sack AVB until there is no other alternative by which time our only truly world class player will be gone and the chance of buying top players is gone with him. HR might not have been the ultimate answer in fact I’m sure he wasn’t but he was better than the man in charge now and to sack him without bringing in someone better was irresponsible to say the least. Levy must be held responsible for our poor results and boring play(which hurts the most) and all you Harry haters gave Levy the licence to get rid of him. You may be quite content watching mid table boring crap as long as the managers face fits but I had my fill of that while Francis was in charge, it was all injuries and other excuses then, have you ever thought that AVBs fine season in charge at Porto was the flash in the pan and that all the shit that has followed him since is more to his actual standard.

    [Reply]

    East Stand Reply:

You could be right about the flash in the pan season, the more time goes on and he doesn’t get anywhere near that level, people will start saying it more and more. Ginger’s gotta get his plan into action and bloody quick!! If he actually has one…

I don’t think Levy will give a toss about having egg on his face, i think he’s far too pragmatic a character to care about what people think of him. He will do what he thinks is right for the club, whatever that may be. That’s always been his way. Anyway, why is it Levy’s fault if AVB is actually shit?

Some will say he should never have booted Harry out and if we look like a rudderless ship and our season becomes a mid-table disaster, they’d have every right to. Despite what HH and others might think of the ‘saggycockernywankerbarraboybastard’.

Our lack of know how and our lack of closing down the opposition enabled the Lazio midfielders to ping their passes into the spce behind our highline.

And Naughton, if that man gets trapped any more times on the sideline, starts running towards our goal, losses possession instead of using the Mick McCarthy method – I’ll scream. He learnt nothing from the Maribor ricket. McCarthy rule was “put it in row Z – as far as I know nobody’s ever scored from Row Z”. Regarding the graphic picture that is doing the rounds of the poor bloke with a serious head injury. Is this a genuine photo related to the Rome incident or a fake? The name Ashley Mills is mentioned but this fan did an interview in the Evening Standard and that is not him in the photo on a hospital bed. The fan has also been called Ashley Williams so it is a little bit ambiguous. I am wondering whether it is a fake photo or at least not related to the incident in Rome. One or two people have said it isn’t related.

Either way I suppose it is beside the point. What happened in Rome is abhorrent and has scarred the spurs support as a collective. Nobody deserves to suffer in this way for the love of their football team. There must be severe consequences. How can we as fans show our support at the game on Sunday for the fans attacked and seriously injured in Rome? What is THFC doing to ‘support’ their supporters during their hour of need??

Looking at it now, I reckon that what the QPR squad lacks is a few ‘characters about the place’. You know, Scotty Parker, his banjo may be shot to pieces, he might never kick a ball again, but he’s just a really triffic person, a top top pro and the kind of lad you want on your training ground.

As fortune would have it, he already has Nelsen, who is a real good example of a really old bastard, way past it, who trains really hard every day and somehow still plays top level football.

That doesn’t sound good at all… It sounds to me like everyone wants to sort it out but they’re starting to wonder how and are at a loss at the moment. This does point to the manager i’m afraid, he oversees everything. It’s his system, his coaching and his man management that influence what happens on the pitch, who else do you look to?

I honestly think the next 3-4 games will decide the future, i didn’t before as i saw a long term plan but if you can’t sort out the present what’s the use? This next home game is crucial, i’m dreading it now!! We have not looked a real cohesive unit yet this season and we don’t seem to be building anything at the moment.

I honestly think despite all the good will towards AVB and a long plan, Levy will pull the trigger unless things start to look up and our performances look more consistent. Maybe AVB is just not suited to managing over here, maybe the season with Porto was a one off after all? I’m on the brink of starting to think that now, i hope i’m wrong but it is a long standing fear i have with him. I hoped he would prove otherwise but it’s not looking too hot right now…

You think he was really in for Cole and Adam? I am of the opinion Spurs feigned interest in those two to get Comolli and Liverpool to move for them and use up what money they had left as they were our main rivals for 4th/5th at the time. I don’t believe there was any serious interest in those two. As for Beckham, that would have been about 3-4 games in the MLS off season, and?

I guess it all fits the ‘Arry’ stereotype as usual… He got us higher in the Premier League twice then anyone else has managed to do, and regardless of if you like him or not as a bloke, i think that counts for something. The same old tired insults about his appearance, accent, things he came out with is just peripheral crap of no significance as far as i can see.

His record with us in terms of league placing stands up as the best in the Premier League era, can you and others not find it within yourself to acknowledge that rather than say things about him i doubt they would actually say to his “saggy” face?

I also back AVB, i think he could be the right man for a long term plan at the club and he needs more time to put it in place, we are in a slightly transitional period at the moment. I’m not going to trot out the same old stereotypes about his notebook or whatever just because we’ve played like a bucket of pig-sick at home to relegation fodder. Let these managers do their job and judge them on their job alone and the circumstances they work in, not on all the press created cliches. We’ve all seen the way they’ve portrayed AVB so far too, it’s all bollocks.

I believe there’s an element of Levy doing this in Harry’s sacking… Fair enough if he had Carlo Ancellotti waiting in the wings to take over but stupid and childish for a man with Levys business acumen. I myself have no personal grievance with AVB he seems a decent man but he also seems to over complicate things and out of his depth.
Another thing that keeps being targeted at HR was the signings of Nelson and Saha , from all that I’ve read and listened to in the media they were more Levys signings than HR’s the famous drop from 3rd to an suicidal 4th may be layed at Levys door for not buying a world class player or so in the January window.

Yes he’s old-skool but his league record with us was not, and has not been equalled in what 25 years? If that still makes him nothing more than some sort of Arthur Daley chancer, what exactly does that say about our club?

If you don’t like him as a person (how anyone can even form an opinion of a human being without actually meeting them and spending time with them i don’t know) that’s one thing.
