Sieg Heil.

Team selection for this evening leaves little to the imagination. That said I’m unconvinced that the boss will go with my line up. I’ve based my picks less on the opponents tonight and more on the ever looming tie against Manchester City. If this ‘plan’ of playing the best and the brightest of the kids needs a boost, then that’s down to manager to use his bench. My side is designed not to harm us after the full time whistle has blown. Did I already say that?

Anyone you can’t see on the board above needs to be rested. Huddlestone believe it or don’t is looking like our first choice midfield general as I type and so given his need to sit down every now and again and have a dark tea with 3 large sugars in it, he has to sit this one out.

Vertonghen is another one that can fade and I would have him on the bench at most.

Crucial that Hugo keeps his distribution away from Dawson. I don’t say this out of spite. Rather I have this thing about retaining possession. Not passing to the opposition. That sort of thing. Carrol needs to be fed so he can feed both Bale and Dempsey.

Now this isn’t a request for a game of hoof-ball, but Bale might want to consider that Dempsey is decent areal threat and swing the odd ball into him.

Falque, I’ve picked you because Azza Blud won’t survive 90 minutes on a Sunday if he does 90 on a Thursday. But also because you have great potential. However, if you take anymore of those corners that don’t rise above knee height I fully expect you to settle the invoice for a new telly which I will submit to you on Friday.

I want fluid passing with a purpose (yes I mean you Jake so look lively son). Get the ball to the creatives and give us a goal or two. Do your very best. We should win this by 2 goals.

Well I take it back..it was slightly entertaining!!
Who would have thought FOUR FOUR TWO at home to lesser opposition and and we dominate, create chances and win! No, they weren’t Man U but neither are Norwich so hopefully AVB has written something new in his little book of tactics!

Oh and nice to hear the ground in full song yesterday, my fav chant has to have been in honour of yesterdays blog…’We are Tottenham Hotspur, we sing what we want’..enough said!

Don’t look the look of that centre of midfield – too lightweight. If Walker is available I’d try him in the middle – at least he’s not afraid to take the game to the opposition. This is one match where support is gonna count. Silence and groans will encourage the visitors. It might look insignificant as a fixture – but AVB won’t want to rack up 3 consecutive home defeats.

Why no Andros? I’d rather him than Livermore.

And is there no chance of seeing Ade tonight then?

  • jayspurs Says:

If the players don’t turn up tonight i.e. they send in some cloned clowns who just come down to the Lane for a casual Sunday afternoon kickabout like the last 2 games in the Europa, and if ‘der Boss’ does not field an attacking line-up, then it all could get very ugly in the morning… Management and players have, respectively, ‘promised’ a better performance and also expressed anger at the Wigan performance so there’s a lot at stake here one feels… Let’s hope the Block J lads can lead the way with their promised choir of positivity. Viva Tottingham.

  • Paul9inch Says:

    Actually I think I’d take the opposite approach and play a near full strength side as;

    a) it gives the chance for AVB to try an experimental, unthinkable home formation of basically 4 4 2 (as you have) and let the team get comfortable with that plus Defoe & Ade up front

b)if we dont win this tonight we may as well forget the EL and stop wasting resources pursuing it.

Expecting Spurs to get at least 4 tonight

I think Ade HAS to start tonight, if anything to get him on the bloody pitch, if he bangs a couple in tonight it might put him in contention with some confidence and match fitness for Sunday here is my guess
    Lloris
    Walker-Dawson-Caulker-Naughton
    Falque-Livermore-Carrol-Bale
    Defoe-Ade

And I am not convinced that the leftovers are any good. My team tonight therefore is as follows:
    Some Spurs players.

We’re going to need more then resting a few to give that mob a mauling, but I agree in principle. The next couple of weeks ain’t going to be for the faint hearted. You’re going to have to stock up on cheese to stop this gaff from a complete meltdown.

    [Reply]

    Harry Hotspur Reply:

I don’t think there’s enough cheese in the world.

    daytripper11 Reply:

That is an outstanding point HH. So just as you suggest, lets rest the players we really need fit to lock down sh*tty; our back line and the CMs.

Then, since we can expect our strikers will not play much of a role on the weekend, lets play all our best attacking players. This would be Ade & JD up front, with Dempsey playing the Dembele role (his best role IMO).

There were holes all over this Maribor defence. A team with a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3, that can get numbers in the box and keep pressure on them continually, is going to score a plethora of goals against them.

    [Reply]

    cincinnatiyid Reply:

Spurs have not suffered from plethora since last year’s romp over Newcastle. Kickoff is at 3 EST here in Obamaworld, and I am unable to convince myself that it is worth going across the street to the local watering hole to beg them to let me watch Fox Soccer Channel.

My prediction: another disspirited performance, with yet another 1-1 tie. Goal by Dempsey, which you Brits will insist he gets no credit for whatsoever.

    Nevertheless, COYS!!

  • Eyeball Paul Says:

The Eyeballer cannot agree with your team selection Harry.

A solid performance with some lovely goals is a necessity big time – especially with the Muslim Mancs on the horizon (sorry Herbert!)

Confidence is the key to winning at Eastlands(with a little bit of team selection), but if the majority of the first teamers from Saturday last go straight into such a huge game as that against Citeh, we havent a hope. City have already gained a confidence boost after their ‘comeback’ performance against Ajax….

The Eyeballer would keep it REAL and field a strong team tonight, with the objective ‘to let the goals flow’

The Eyeballer XI to start tonight:

    Doris
    Naughton Dawson Caulker Walker
    Bale Vert Thudd Falque
    Ade Defoe

I’ve not met anyone who agrees with me, I admit, but I feel our apocalyptic collapse last season came not because of Redknapp’s England shenanigans, but as a result of that horrible confidence shattering reverse against the goons in Feb. That’s what did it. Our swagger never returned since that day.
As a result I care little about Maribor. Or even Man City. My eyes are on the gooner match. Wide, terrified eyes. It is SO important for our collective psyche – players and support. The only importance I place on our two prior matches is to boost the troops’ confidence and get them up for the emirates. Otherwise the filthy goons will finally deal Levy’s 10 year plan a brutal, crunching, skull-collapsing death blow.

You can add one more to that list of dissenters.

Lennon went down the following week and everybody started double and triple teaming Bale. If you look at the long swoon we suffered through and then the lift in play the last few matches, it coordinated perfectly with having Lennon in the starting XI.

Also, Modders effort and level of play took a tremendous nosedive the instant the England rumours started. There was a lot of chatter online at the time that Luka was very close and loyal to HR and was really disturbed by the whole matter.

Regardless, If Arse come out with the same squad they started this past weekend, you have absolutely nothing to fear.

Scores on those Daws (now with added Daws)

Lloris – nothing to do, some good distribution, could have done without the ‘incident’ 6/10

Daws – decent stuff, athletic and some really top notch passing today. Unruffled. 7/10

Vert – arrested the form slide with an easy run out. Nothing spectacular going forward this time. 6/10

Naughton – still learning on the job (see also Walker). Awful pass back ‘incident’, decent last ditch challenge in the penalty area. Will improve. 6/10

Walker – spent loads of time in the oppo half, just the way he likes it I’m guessing. Still scared of crossing. 5/10

Carroll – impressive, looks for the ball, some good turns, good at releasing the front men, a decent combo with the Hudd. A little edgy in his passing at times but will relax with 1st team minutes. 7/10

Hudd – slated the milk float a couple of weeks ago, has settled down, the first touch is back, smooth passing and looks a little fitter. Could be hope yet though a long way to go 7/10

Bale – ferocious performance by the Welsh wing wizard (you know, the good family man one, not the other one…). Started losing his cool and realised the toughest duel he could face today was with the ref and went for it! Ripped ‘em to shreds, monkey mania 9/10

Lennon – really good approach play, terrible final ball/shots. Has to improve when we face the big boys, you can’t be this wasteful. His confidence is great to see, the sloppiness not so welcome 6/10

Ade – played all over the shop, generally pretty deep, occasionally drifted wide, this became a bit annoying today when we want to win headers up top and score from crosses :S As the game wore on something started stirring though, he warmed into proceedings, there were glimpses of the phenomenal player he is – he brings the unpredictability we crave a la a Berbs or a Kanu. A little unlucky, we wanna see that smile back 7/10

Defoe – he loves games like this, loads of chances, loads of through balls, nice and open. Is he a flat track bully? Maybe a little bit… You can only shoot down what’s in front of you – against this type of oppo expect him to give no quarter. Pop 9/10

AVB – this will be reported as AVB finally giving in and adopting a 4-4-2. The reality is Ade played here, there and everywhere rather than hovering around the box. This was still pretty much the usual formation but it is great to see Ade involved, he is just far more creative and experienced than Sig or Dempsey playing behind Defoe. Let’s be honest a fit and in form Adebayor would make our best 11 this season, probably alongside an in form Defoe. The Tom-Tom midfield was a little lightweight but didn’t creak too much here. Tougher tests await and fingers crossed reinforcements arrive soon. Carroll and Hudd certainly provide different sub options once everyone is fit and will really push Dempsey, Sig, Livermore and Parker for game time. Better motivation tonight, went attacking, put faith in the right young player (Carroll) and experimented a bit. On the right track 8/10

    [Reply]

    emspurs Reply:

Pretty good analysis. Thought Carroll and Ade deserved 8s and Defoe was 8 at best.

    [Reply]

    spursgoliath Reply:

Once Ade woke up he was an 8 but there was a very sleepy opening 20 minutes.

Defoe is frustrating, yes he was offside a bit and doesn’t always see the pass BUT he isn’t scared of putting the ball in the net while all around him seem allergic to this (Lennon and Ade guilty of fluffing some really good chances). Just for that he gets a 9 today.

Carroll looked a little bit jittery a few times but I’d be happy awarding him an 8 in terms of stepping up a level and taking hold of a game tonight.

Lennon still can’t regularly cross above knee height, usually settles to win the corner and looks terrified of taking a direct shot at goal. He looks happy and confident which is the positive thing, final product was near non existent in this game.

Only the second good performance I have seen this season. The other was the 0-0 thrashing of Lazio.

Two points to make: Huddlestone is back to his best in terms of passing. I saw long passes, one after another, straight to the players feet. A real joy to watch.

We looked so much more threatening with Ade up front. I think that was the key to Defoe’s success tonight. Playing JD as the “lone gunman” was never a good idea IMO, but with Ade alongside, it reduces the attention that JD might otherwise attract. Let’s stick with 4-4-2, or make Ade the lone striker.

As many of you would have guessed The Eyeballer is well happy with that performance (albeit against shite opposition – truth be told)…

    Some comments:
Midget Gem – he is a gem in that sort of mood – his first goal was pure class. He must start against City.

Ade – great to see him back. Would love to see him and Defoe start at City – would be a real statement of intent from us

Carroll – Didn’t think too much of him last year, but wow, he was fantastic last night – proper training sessions, confidence and freedom to play allowed him to flourish – his forst time pass to Defoe for the second goal was sublime

Defensively we still look shaky – even with Vert at CB.

Lennon, Ade need to be more selfish in front of goal – we are not arsenal, pull the trigger and get some!

We are seven points behind City, correct? The Eyeballer’s provisional team for Sunday:

    Lloris

    Walker Gallas Caulker Vert

    Ade Defoe

Just like to say that last night’s positives for me where a) Carroll b) the wingers (as usual) c) how sharp JD looked and d) (the most important) how well Dawson played. He is so underrated at the Lane (wtf I am agreeing with Andy ‘No Clue’ Townsend) People go on about him lumping it, but when he is on form, has played a bit a gets it right, he pings it out wide to Bale and Lennon early and lets them get going (which he did countless times yesterday and I know it was only Marigold FC). How often do you see that with Gallas, who I think is shite on the ball and takes far too long to give it to someone better? I think it was Tevez who said that he found Daws his most difficult opponent and he is not bad. For me, Gallas out, Daws back in as captain. He is after all former player of the year and would probably have been the next England ‘cab of the rank’ had it not been for him getting injured on Int duty… Just saying. Yido!!

If they dictate the pace and midfield we will lose
We have to get out there early and go for it
and use the counter later if they are desperate
We need Ade and Defoe out there at the same time early.Ade playing deeper and holding and finding the winger or Defoe.Anything else is suicide.

I get The Independent when I can get off my retired ass to get to the papershop, and if I read the article correctly the main complaint is the offense taken by Jewish people if the word is used by Gentiles. He fails to mention that the word itself is used by Jewish Spurs fans and does not address that point except for; “It would be easy enough to organise and hardly expensive. All you need in a relatively small space is a Jewish person of workaday sensitivity and pride and some bozo in a blue-and-white scarf addressing him as a Yid however well-meaningly”. I assume from his perspective that he assumes that the Jewish person is easily led by the bozo in the blue-and-white scarf and can’t come to a conclusion over a very serious issue on his own terms. Once again in his tedious article he states “The compelling reality is there is no circumstance in which Jewish people would describe themselves as Yids and those in White Hart Lane who may be more numerous than Baddiel believes, who hear it regularly can only be touched by disgust and maybe even a little despair”. I wonder if he has ever actually spoken to any Jewish Spurs fan or done any serious research at all before publishing this Baddiel- induced drivel. I know this might be hard for him, judging by his picture, but maybe he could point his not inconsiderable bulk down towards White Hart Lane, do some serious journalism that might have a teeny weeny bit of research to back it up an ASK THE FANS THEMSELVES.
