And for Jose to ask him to also take extra training!! Perhaps Modric has let the move and the money go to his head? I don’t think he’ll do anything at Real Madrid of any note.

The simple answer is yes,or rather no.Truth is situated somewhere between the two realities but joined by the unswerving concept that it is both not there and there at the same time.
Being a Tottenham supporter and actually being there (in the film Chance takes a seed, plants the seed, waters the ground and the seed turns into a growing plant which solves the worlds problems)at some point in my life offered me a touch of the garden itself but since then it also has allowed me to see both sides of an equation,i.e.Both the side that is there and the side thats not.But that hasn’t been times when its looked like we were there only to find we were not and sometimes
it was quite the reverse. It seemed we were hopelessly not there only to see that we could be.
Its a bit of a dichotomy.

Once we’d lost our CL spot last summer, we had to go all out for a top top striker and more quality in midfield. It’s a horrible cliche, but ‘lack of ambition’ was there to for us see even then. It’s sickening that 4th or even 3rd place is there for the taking, with only the Gooners as realistic possibles to take 4th from us,and yet whenever we look like rising above the others and making 4th a certainty, something like this happens.
To try to survive the season with just Ade-I earn too much to bother trying-bayor and Jermain as strikers, is plain stupid. And don’t imagine we’ll buy big in January. Never have, never will.

According to BBC, we have now conceded 10 goals in the last 15 minutes of matches this season.
No other team have conceded so many.
Not a great surprise when you think of how many games we have ended up clinging on in.
Even the 3-1 win over West Ham, they had chances to score at the end, despite the fact we had battered them for 80 minutes.
So is it due to defensive substitutions, tiredness due to lack of rotation of the squad or just a lack of backbone ?

    [Reply]

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

Battering for 80 minutes helps but you need to make the other team pay.In this game we didnt batter them. They actually controlled as much as we did but we lacked an edge about us especially in finishes. We rarely attacked the goal itself. The subsitutions were not bad.We were lacking presence in attacking midfield as both Dembele and Sandro were playing more as DM’s
The point is we lacked any true penetration.Howard was rarely tested.
Defoe was a passenger,Ade was his usual laisse affair self,Lennon was lacking bite and the attacking midfield was lacking for a big part of the game.
In defence we held well but Everton looked sharper up front that we did (like they actually cared and we didnt)

Hold on….Our survey said …….‘LACK OF BACKBONE!’

    [Reply]

    East Stand Reply:

Sorry Ronnie, i’m not sure i agree. For me taking Defoe off was a mistake, the worst thing you can do when trying to defend a lead in this league is to start taking forwards off.

Regardless of how ineffective Defoe may have looked, keeping two up front with a supporting midfielder is the best thing you can do rather than trying to play possession football to see the game out by over staffing the midfield. This takes the pressure off their defenders and gives them time on the ball to hit it long and effectively bypass your eight midfielders… It might work in Europe sometimes but most teams in England will always go direct if chasing a game late on and taking off forwards makes life difficult, not easier. Yes we have a soft centre and it’s been there a long time and the players need to look at themselves but so does AVB here. He still seems to be naive to the ways of this league.

    [Reply]

    Essexian76 Reply:

Two of Everton’s most effective attackers are indeed their full backs Baines and Coleman-who we allowed even more possession and momentum by dropping so deep, so instead of giving them something to worry about-we actually made it easier for them-brainless

I know you think Lloris is the 2nd coming, but I still feel he was a purchase that could have waited, and more vital positions like a decent full back or 2,a striker or two, a creative mid..blah, blah could be sorted- then perhaps getting a Jack Butland type in place for when Brad begins his coping with incontinence classes next summer.

I cannot be bothered to check the stats but have a feeling Chelsea under AVB conceded lots of goals in the last 15 minutes of matches.

Also believe this is the first game we have lost that Dembele has played in. Interesting that when he left the pitch we were winning.

  • East Stand Says:

Not knocking AVB totally here because our soft centre seems to be a perennial problem. However, just because you are a goal up away you don’t need to start taking off forwards. It’s just so fucking naive… How many times has he done this now?

Everton were always going to come out at the end of the game being a goal down, they are a good team and also one that fights for everything as Moyes demands they do. If you leave your attacking threat ON the pitch, even if you need to play more direct to reach them with passes, the opposition leave themselves vulnerable at the back when chasing the game. This also means they can’t settle at the back and send as accurate service into the box as they’re being closed down by your forwards but this obviously isn’t a concept familiar to AVB is it!

I back AVB and he’s still learning but anyone who want’s to keep telling me he’s this ‘tactical’ mastermind had just better shut the fuck up now… He has shown NO better in-game tactical changes than Redknapp did so far. Today was pathetic from the players but almost as bad from AVB. Falque is not going to help us in that situation any better than leaving Defoe on. does my head in, just when i think he’s getting it sorted…

He’s naive to the ways of English football still and the penny needs to drop.

If we continue to chase worthless pot’s, why is anyone surprised when we continually run out of steam against sides that have had a weeks break-we’ve played twice a week since the beginning of the season, and coincidentally have conceded goals that’ll prevent us from getting into the CL,which will cost the club a fortune and will see the like’s of Bale leaving because they’ll want CL football!

Good point mate. Everton will have been much fresher for the last 3rd of that game.

H.R didn’t attempt to go for the Europa League and got 4th twice, if we don’t get 4th but get to the semi of that or even win it, will that be about Spurs or AVB wanting to show the rest of Europe that he can still do what he did at Porto? He’s playing a dangerous game, the league is way too competitive to mess about.

I’ve been banging on about this since August-first up-It’s not the cup we proudly won-it’s a mish mash of also rans and losers and has no monetary value or kudos whatsoever=Athletico got a measly 8.5m for winning it, while we actually made a loss. If we managed to get to the final that’s another 9 flippin’ games to navigate! When we’re out of it, it’ll be too late0as it all starts again end Feb, when the weather’s at it’s worst and fixtures come thick and fast-madness, Harry got it 100% right-it’s a waste of flippin time and resources

    [Reply]

    East Stand Reply:

I’ve been warming to AVB and i think he could be good long term but one thing he needs to get a grip on quickly is how physical this league is compared to Portugal, amongst other things. Also that Spurs are not so much better in terms of quality in depth than the rest of the league as Porto were when he won the title there and also won the Europa.

Whatever we may have thought of H.R, he was was very experienced with players and knowing how they tick, being fresh for a game is not only physical but also mental. It’s very easy to lose that edge and concentration if you play sport too often without sufficient rest. Unless you rotate a lot it’s very difficult to compete well with only 3 days rest.

Is it any wonder that AVB has never played at any decent level, lacks experience in this country and is only 35 when he makes choices like this? Maybe he’ll learn but he’s in danger of ruining our season by trying to win a nothing trophy he won before and is clearly obsessed with winning again.

He doesn’t understand this league yet as far as i’m concerned, regardless of how good he may or may not be. We are NOT Porto and this is NOT the Portuguese league, a totally different situation.

    East Stand Reply:

It’s not yet critical, we’re still in there for 4th now but later in the season he may just get a little tap on the shoulder from the chairman reminding him about the target of top 4 if things carry on like this? Levy will be livid if it costs us top 4, in fact it could lead to a row…

Evening Essex, I hope you were not one of the poor sods who went to the game today, the journey back for them must have been a nightmare.

Would have happily settled for a point before the game but when you get that close to 3 points only to end up with nothing.

But generally we have lacked a resoluteness about our play.
The truth of all really is somewhere between Harry’s ad hoc style and AVB’s but in retrorespect the results are not that much different.Bale gets hot,we look good otherwise we are probably just above average.

No David, not on my watch today, but I’m relieved the lads have a weeks break before Sunday’s game-although Verts looks knackered having played all of our games plus internationals, as has Defoe and a few others-listened on Radio 5 dead-but you just knew it was going to happen-To be fair, we’ve had a fair run of the ball of late-and if Siggy’s shot goes in-it’s 3 in the bag-but Ade, oh dear-is everything a joke to him?

    david Reply:

I don’t think we are doing Verts any good playing him at LB.
Naughton looked shaky playing there Thursday night so our options are limited until BAE returns.
Funny thing is, Rose is getting good reviews at LB for Sunderland but I guess we cannot just recall him.
Looks like some of our long term sick will be back soon, which is just as well with games coming thick and fast over Xmas.
Will be giving MOT’D a wide berth tonight.

    Essexian76 Reply:

Perhaps if we hadn’t allowed Rose out on loan then maybe those options would’ve been covered? I know hindsight’s a wonderful thing but a little foresight wouldn’t go amiss sometimes-I mean, CL or EL?, you tell me, after looking at our squad and comparing it to those we’re competing with for those CL slots, it’s hardly rocket science is it?

  • UnkleKev Says:

Both Everton goals came from crosses put in from our left side. Blame has been apportioned to both Caulker and Gallas but Everton targetted our left flank and ultimately their persistence was rewarded. And why did Everton deploy this tactic? Because they knew the wandering Dempsey would offer absolutely no protection to Vetonghen.

Dempsey is average at best and a downright liability at worst. Time to ditch him (and maybe give Sigurdsson a run) before he costs us any more points.

On a more positive note, as has been pointed out ad nauseum over the last few days if games ended after 80 minutes we’d be top of the league — so we’re clearly doing something right. A little bit of fine-tuning and fourth is the least we’ll achieve this season.
