Good afternoon.
There is a discernible mumble doing the rounds it would appear that we have made serious enquiries about Arsenal’s Theo Walcott. Sure this suggestion has surfaced before. Every rag from the Wall St Journal to War Cry has a run at some stage this year.
Another Arsenal contract running down so there’s a fortnight left on it. But in this instance this guy won’t be heading to United or City. He won’t be linked with a move to Barcelona. But does that mean we should look down our noses at him? I wouldn’t be in hurry to dismiss the idea.
Walcott isn’t the world’s greatest player. I’m not selling him to you as some panacea. Rather I’m thinking we could play him where we played Rafa and add a much needed zap of creativity to a midfield that has been left decimated. The conventional arguments against him joining are worthless. We have Gallas and Adebayor on our books.
He knows the league, he’s motivated and he wants a career. The question is would you ship him in? I would.
The latest Hotspur’s Half Hour is out now!

Im with you on this one Harry. He’s got pace to burn, has a good cross but most importantly he knows where the goal is. If he plays throught he middle he’ll create and also he’ll give Lennon some well needed compitition. Lets face it, theres always been a wisp of disappointment with Lennon…poor crossing, bad decison making etc. Then when he finally looks like pushing on, he gets injured.
Anyway Walcott’s also injury prone and god forbid we ever sign anybody thats not
Im all for it, if hes up for it, ship him in.

It’s a crime how successive England managers have failed to utilise Azza even as an impact sub. His defensive qualities have always gone unnoticed too. On the right hand side I’d say he was the better player.
Walcott could however do a job for us up front and as well as cover/rotation on the wings

He wants to play through the middle. Wenger seems reluctant to deploy him there. How sweet would it be if we were to pick him up and turn him into the new Henry*.

“His finishing is just as good as a striker”
55 goals in 257 appearances, is not the kind of “striker” I want anywhere near the club.
Oh and he has far less assists than winger Lennon. Note that Lennon actually is a winger and doesn’t have I pretend to be striker because unlike Walcott he is good on one position and bad in both.

Billy Lane Reply:

hmmm, i’m not against the idea, however I don’t think he knows his best position, winger, striker or ‘in the hole’ as you suggested h, (has he ever played there?) I certainly wouldn’t drop lennon for him, and i’d rather have Ade and Defoe up top but we are light and a move could breed new life into him and his finishing is getting better. However I just don’t think he’d come to Spurs thanks to some misguided loyalty to Arsenal and his ‘father figure wenger’ unless of course Wilshere is now Jimmy’s I mean Arsenes favourite and the sweets have run dry. To the bindippers as a new ‘super center forward’ is my guess it could work, if it happens I hope it doesnt although he doesn’t rile me as much as most Arsenal players and his birds FAF

Walcott would be an absolutely useless player for us. Never mind the arse-connection. His only real skill is running fast. He can’t cross, he can’t beat a man and he can’t turn. I’ll concede he is decent one on one with the keeper, but when playing against an organized defence or a team laying deep he is about as usefull as Jose Domingues.
Add to that the fact the he himself thinks he’s a world beater and you get a pretty good outlook of his footballing brain!

November 15th, 2012 at 2:41 pm
Adebayor / Defoe, up front or in the hole with Walcott. Bale and Lennon on the wings. That is some serious pace.
Parker, Demebele or Sandro sitting deep in midfield, battling and holding it all together. We may be on to something with that.
Not Walcott’s biggest fan, prefer Lennon on the Wing (if the wing is part of the midfield ie 442), but Walcott does score even from the wing and has blistering pace, so could surely do the business up top, especially playing off someone like Ade. For free / cheap it would be a great bit of business.

He might negotiate £15m if we don’t buy him in January.
Trea hm like an investment.
[Reply]
November 15th, 2012 at 3:13 pm
I certainly don’t see him signing a pre-contract with us in January, with a transfer in the summer. Not even he is stupid enough to think that being an Arse players who has already signed for the Mighty Mighty Hotspur of the Lane would be a tenable situation.
As for the rest of it, it’s probably unlikely, even if there are few other obvious destinations for him. If nothing else, I think he sees himself as a nailed on CL player, and probably wouldn’t join us unless qualification was already nailed on (ie, not before the summer).
I don’t hate the idea of signing him certainly. I’ve criticised him many times before, for being a one trick pony/flat track bully. And he is that. But that can be useful. We could use one more winger with pace. As it stands, the thought of losing Bale or Azza to injury scares the bujeezus out of me.

Rather we spend our money where we need it most… on a top striker.. been waiting for one since before Arry’s time
We got our GK & CB positions well covered now.. where we fall short is cover for Dembele in the creative role, and a long long overdue striker
Lured by the bargain buy, we keep shipping in players who play positions we are well covered for, and this eats into our striker war chest
I don’t like using Man Utd as an example, but with them and their leaky defence, and their midfield which is normally run by 38-yr-olds, there’s always an RVP or a Chicarito, Wellbeck or a Rooney who’s gonna score more on the day
We badly need to get a scoring mentality back into our system.. too much emphasis on possession and midfield crowding is not allowing for much clear cut goal chances, and goals is what will give us the 3 points

Are we trying to turn the Lane into a home for wayward Arse’s – In the words of Spurs legend Chris Waddle “He doesn’t know how to play football.”
I have a theory :
There are footballers who are trained to be athletes to Varying degrees of success – i.e. Van Der Vaart (on the slow side) or Rooney (on the fast side). Neither of these are natural athletes and will probably do an Alan Brazil and expand thrice ways. Then there are athletes that are taught to be Footballers such as Kyle Walker or Gervihno. Theo Walcott falls into the latter category I’m afraid. If you have as much contact with scum supporters as I have on a daily basis you will realise how frustating Walcott is to them – he is the first name they scream when looking for a scapegoat when the Winteburn hits the fan.
I would gladly hold you in front of Levy to help him dodge that bullet, and I’m a fan of yours.

I would have him in a heartbeat, pace to burn, maybe needs a confidence boost, but still young and athletic – I can vividly remember the match at the Emirates last season… unfortunately.

Horrific, lazy player who only scores tap ins. Wages could be much better spent elsewhere; take a punt on zaha, get moutinho or huntelaar, bust a gut for willian…

How can you even entertain the idea? I think he’s the most overrated player in the league personally and the idea that he would add ‘creativity’ is just laughable. What on earth does he have in common with VDV by the way?
It’s got people talking but after the signings of Dempsey and Siggy, signing this muppet would indicate just how much we’ve lost our way. We are playing boring football and now we are looking to sign a reject Goon? This is just utter pants… can we move on?
Oh yeah, i want my Tottenham back!!

The notion that Walcott could play for Spurs is a very un-inspiring one once I get over the Arsenal thing. It’s not because he isn’t any good, he’s a great footballer really.
But I feel we need someone epic. Not just a talented forward but someone with character and presence. We have some really good guys playing for us, great defenders, pacey wingers but in order for any of that to be of real use you need that ‘special’ player that stamps his authority on a game. Some one who digs a bit deeper to push everyone forward.
I know thats not exactly a pearl of wisdom but I think it’s a simple truth that we have to except.
I’ll maintain my cynicism whatever player we’re linked with until I see us en-earth somebody truly great. An individual who can inspire those around him to keep it going until the end. Every successful Prem team has one, Manure have had so many in the last couple of decades.
We need another Spurs Legend to make us exciting. Not another bit part player or sick note.
