Good morning,

Unless I’ve got this wildly wrong today’s Andy Carroll piece in the Daily Mail is er… made up.

FIFA Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players, Chapter III: Registration of Players, Article 5.3 stated:

Players may be registered for a maximum of three clubs during the period from 1 July until 30 June of the following year. During this period, the player is only eligible to play in Official Matches for two clubs.

Andy Carroll came on in the 83rd minute for Borini in the Liverpool vs Manchester City game on the 26th of August. So if we did buy him it would be shall we say, an ambitious tactic to put it mildly.

84 min Plan C for Liverpool. The C stands for Carroll. He’s on for Borini to a big cheer from the Kop which is surely somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

Guess if “registered” also includes a loan period.

If a manager could see some potential for him becoming a more prolific goal scorer He could become a sensation. Massive gamble though as Liverpool would want to recoup a big percentage of their outlay.

(aside: Nicholson saw the potential in Chivers and he became a monster for 2 seasons)

    [Reply]

    cookiebun Reply:

Yeah, but Nicholson was a successful manager and well trusted when he suggested Chivers. Could you imagine the look on Levy’s face if AVB suggested Carroll. He’s a donkey and even Levy knows that.

    [Reply]

    paul9inch Reply:

Personally I feel if a good manager got hold of him there could be something there (but at the right price).

But you’ve brought up another point and thats how transfer policy actually works at Spurs. I dont think anybody outside the club truly knows.

    [Reply]

    TMWNN Reply:

    I know it doesn’t work.

Levy has left VB high and dry.

If the football hasn’t improved by January, will Levy back AVB by signing decent players or will he just go along with what we’ve got as long as we’re not in trouble?

The happy clappers and the booers will continue to go regardless so does he even care?

    LosLorenzo Reply:

Levy proabably does first and foremost care about building the wealth of the club. I don’t know if he sees the fans as anything more as a means to this end.

What I do know is that he cares very much about CL money as a means to his ends. And you don’t get that without a quality squad with a good manager.

    LLL Reply:

Levy is just the managing director. I’d like to see our bogus sugar daddy / billionaire non-tax paying owner Joe Lewis back Levy with a bit of his own pocket change once in a while.

    LosLorenzo Reply:

Yes, it is the god given right of any football team to just receive money from their owners without said owners expecting any return on their money. Any owner not willing to blow loads of money is clearly not rich enough to own a pwoper club.

    I dunno…

I think a lot of people would agree with me if I said that these owners are the root of many of modern football’s problems (‘bankfunned’ clubs, insane player wages, etc.).

Can’t argue that Spurs wouldn’t benefit on the field from being the plaything of some dictator or crime lord or whatever. At least in the short term, until Aleksandr Bin Capone decided he was actually a Formula One, horseracing or powerboat fan and left the club high and dry (case in point: Malaga).

Ideally, though, I don’t want to support a club like that. I’d much rather support a mid-table team doing it “the right way”, that CL contenders on financial EPO.

    LLL Reply:

I’m just saying: Joe Lewis is a billionaire. He doesn’t contribute to society. He owns a football club and expects Levy to make it profitable for him. Therein lies part of the problem, no?

    LosLorenzo Reply:

I don’t think billionaires or owners with profit motives are a problem, no.

I’m no libertarian or empathy-free capitalist. I believe in reasonable market regulation and a strong welfare state.

I also believe that the possibility of entrepreneurs making vast amounts of money is what drives most innovation. And if you didn’t allow said entrepreneurs to keep their money once they’d made it you would soon debase the motivation to create and innovate, to the detriment of the society our children will live in.

By all means, disagree with the way JL made his fortune. He didn’t break the law, though. So if there’s something wrong with how he gained his riches it is the fault of politicians and the judicial branch, who decide what is and isn’t legal. You can’t blame a man for making money withing the law.

To be honest, I couldn’t care less who owns the shares issued by the club. It is my opinion that, regardless of what happens to be registered with HMRC, the club belongs in spirit to the fans.

And I think that cups or awards won by the club are all the more meaningful if they are built on honest, organic growth.

    TMWNN Reply:

No one is talking about throwing money at it City or Chelsea style which could put the club in trouble, but buying one or two major signings that will improve the club, not average players who just pad the squad out and are wage drain.

All this organic bollocks is precisely that. Do you think the club fell out the sky into the hands of ENIC?

    [Reply]

  • offtheshelf Says:

This may well be true but we need a better option up front. Tottenham will never buy or pay the kind of money needed to capture a Tevez type of player.
So we need the kind of player who can cause havoc in the opposition back four with his aggresive style of play, Carol is one of these and if he increased his movement and our midfield moved up five yards (or if we started playing five yards further up as a team) maybe he could be the answer to our lack of goalscoring.

Watching United vs Arsenal at the weekend, what stood out for me was how hard Rooney worked to close down the deep lying Arteta. As a result Arsenal never got going.

In Rooney United have a player with fantastic ability as well as one who works his socks off. The work ethic of the team matches that of Rooney.

If you watch Dempsey, sure he is not in great form but he does not put that sort of effort in, especially for one who sits between the striker and midfield. Sigurdsson does work very hard but he is compensating for a lack of quality so feels the need.

Until we have a team/squad of players who understand and are able to work their socks off as a bare minimum then we will continue to be a team that can beat anyone on their day but will often come unstuck, usually when it’s least expected.

AVB needs to develop this work ethic, so on our bad days at least our work etic will carry us through.
Dempsey needs to get his head up, pass the ball and work harder

    [Reply]

    UnkleKev Reply:

If Rooney loses the ball from an attacking position he’ll harry and chase until he’s atoned for his error; Dempsey sits on the floor rubbing his head.

The really unfortunate aspect of the Dempsey saga is that Kane was allowed to go out on loan to Norwich (where he broke his ankle on his second appearance) — something that wouldn’t have happened if Dempsey hadn’t been signed.

Sigurdsson might not have set the world alight yet, but I’d start him ahead of Dempsey every single time.

    [Reply]

    Devonshirespur Reply:

I agree re: Sigurdsson. At least he gives his all and when we are not at our best that is what is needed.

We have 3 players that work hard, Parker, Sandro and Vertonghen, in fact Vertonghen last Sunday worked his socks off trying to make something happen but the rest were so poor he was flogging a dead horse. Vertonghen is a gem, can see the big clubs knocking for him before long.

    Astro Spur Reply:

I expected a response on Saturday in the 2nd half….however it seemed like the only use the hair dryer got at the weekend was AVB drying his rain soaked beard at HT.

Why very good players looked uninspired and lazy is unrelated to tactics, its motivation. Whether the tactics were right or wrong is another issue. altogether.

My biggest issue (as a person who travels 140 miles round trip to go to games) was the apparent lack of desire shown by our players.

Every team has a bad day, whether it just doesn’t click, whether its the tactics or whether the opposition are simply better. Total effort and the desire to win is the minimum requirement.

Players need motivating from time to time – I care not whether AVB shouts at them all or hugs them all. Motivation is a key part of being a manager esp. through a long season

Carroll is top-class aerially, and can do damage up front. His passing, however, is really poor.

AVB prefers a lone striker formation. Whoever the striker Spurs brings in better be an all-rounder too. Carroll is not going to link well with his teammates. Although he can be good at creating chances upfront, he’ll also give the ball away to the opposition way too much. He’s better suited for West Ham, where they have a team that’s geared towards taking advantage of his physical presence and knock-downs on long balls far from the back, via midfielders running around him to latch onto second balls. Spurs don’t play that way. A good player, no doubt, but a good player that is at odds with the coach’s philosophy. AVB himself has said he is certainly not the type of player Spurs are looking for during the July/August transfer window.
