Good afternoon.

Brentdon Rodgers is a card, eh? There is something in the water at Melwood. I don’t remember him being such an overwhelming twit when he was at Swansea. More to the point I can’t believe that so many Spurs fans would have been suggesting Levy & Co. appointment him after Arry’s demise if that were the case.

Fatigue seemed to be nipping at the heels of one or two. And the decision to fly out the traps was definitely a good one. The Azza Blud goal was a body blow the Bale free kick delicious for us, vomit inducing for them. But and there always is a but, if there’s something in the water up there, then there’s something in the ‘Tottingham Gene’ that tells our lot not to go for the jugular, not to make the victory emphatic.

Overview analysis is that we still desperately need a settled back four. Right now we all too reliant on others pitching in when the heat is on. The return of Moussa is a delight and I look forward to him getting into his stride, finding his groove and really begin pulling the strings again.

The gulf between what Suarez offers and what Defoe offers was chilling. A churlish person would use this as an opportunity to slip in that quote from Arry but I’m not, so I won’t. See what I did there? But the point is we need to have 11 players on the pitch for the whole of every game and with The Midget Gem all too often we are only fielding 10.

When the Bindippers lost the ball the were actually furious and tore about wanting it back. Too frequently we pull a ‘Oh FFS’ face and wait for someone else to take the problem on. Normally that someone else is Sandro hence the fact he’s looking pooped.

Elsewhere it’s the usual business of people seemingly choosing ‘if and when they decide to show up’. I can’t get too overwrought though, because we won and had it not been for a fluke we would have won by 2 goals and not 1.

He’s like one of those bacterial yoghurt drinks that are good for you because they are proactive.

Improved is what he was.

Creaking like a creaking thing.

Needs to play CB

Good 1st half, reverted to type in the 2nd

Like a dog chasing cars

A touch of class. Unfit, but classy.

Unbelievably good free kick. Unbelievable.

When is he ever going to be really good?

Started off quietly and fizzled out.

Fal-cao? More like Kieren Fall-on after a bung…

You are attempting to say ‘I Told You So’ about Rodgers to beef up your own ‘Told You So’ thing about AVB. But Rodgers isn’t doing a terrible job, they were much better in possession than we were all night yesterday. Suarez aside, they are blunter than a peeled potato but that’s not really his fault as the owners hardly backed him in the transfer market.

Just saying. Let’s just take the 3 points graciously. No need to slag off Liverpool or their manager when we were really quite fortunate to have won.

  • LLL Says:

Saying Dawson reverted to type in the 2nd half shows a lack of clear thinking. What you saw was Dawson hacking and hoofing out of the box. What you obviously failed to see was the midfield failing to retain any kind of possession and chaperoning the likes of Johnson and Sterling to swing all manner of balls into our box. It’s not for Dawson to dribble the ball out of the box and keep possession in midfield, it’s for him to clear danger. In that regard, he had a solid 90 minutes, unlike many of the other players in the team.

When will Lennon be really good? :hae: He was probably our best player last night, overall. What is it you want him to be doing?

    [Reply]

    Banger Reply:

I agree, I forgot to mention Lennon and Dawson who I think both had very good games.

I also think Defoe has been one of our best players this season yet he constantly gets knocked as soon as he has a poor game! I personally think his poor performance last night was due to the fact that Dempsey didn’t link the play at all.

Its all very well being critical of Defoe’s contribution when in reality you would also be critical of Suarez’s profligacy if he were in a white shirt.

A more intelligent comment would be what a partnership JD and Suarez would make with the latter committing players and making space for the former. Neither offer the whole package but both are very strong in the some areas.

Liverpool have been poor for a few seasons and this side is no better. We should be beating them at home and we did. Defoe has been the same since we signed him, Keane got in front of him because he worked harder off the ball and eventually Ade will push him out too. Defoe has scored goals and will do at any other club. I agree with HH that we need a player who is more inventive and wants to create for himself and the team. That old fashioned selfish, striker type is extinct! There is no room in the modern game for them

  • Ramos43 Says:

Nice article my friend, although I think you may be being a little harsh comparing Defoe and Suarez.

Yes Suarez was more of a menace last night, but apart from his ability to drop deep and pick a pass, Spurs defending was so terrible that he was always going to look impressive until he actually got a chance….and when he did get that chance ( his one-on-one with Lloris, midway through the first-half) he scuffed it.
Now without meaning to sound biased here, but had Defoe had been presented with a clear shooting opportunity from the edge of the 18 yard box, I would have bet a lot more on him making a better fist of it than Luis.

So while I have to agree that Suarez is undoubtedly a better PLAYER than Defoe, I would have to say that he has still yet to show me during his spell in the EPL that he is a better STRIKER than Jermain!

And also I think the comment on Aaron Lennon is a bit over-board too, especially as he has already been so productive for the team this year. Infact, in terms of numbers (goals/assists), I think Lennon is easily set to complete his best season in a Spurs shirt, to date.
Lenny had a decent game last night, and even when he isn’t quite at his blistering best, the little man is always leading the line (alongside Sandro) when it comes to work-rate and commitment. I wouldn’t swap for anyone!!!

I thought Walker was easily man-of-the-match yesterday and looked a lot more like his old self. While the defence around him went missing, Kyle stood firm and bailed us out on more than one occasion. Hopefully that performance will give him the necessary confidence to really push on and get back to his very best.

The biggest problem, for me, yesterday was the fact that we DID seem to be playing with a man less, but it was the no10 that appeared vacant rather than the striking berth. Because while Defoe ploughed away, admirably, upfront without much reward for 90mins, Dempsey offered very, very little after an encouraging display against West Ham on the weekend.

Now,whether this was down to fatigue or not, I don’t know, but considering he didn’t do a lot while in possession the least he could have done was move around a little faster without the ball. I would love to know exactly how well he and Defoe get on as they NEVER seem to pass the ball to each other. At one point against Liverpool, I thought they were going to come to blows as they conspired to get in eachothers way and squander a goal-scoring opportunity.

Gyfil, bless him, worked hard when he came on but made very little impact in terms of creativity or guile. Instead, he appeared to be doing a man marking role on Joe Allen, which to be honest was quite helpful in stemming The Reds attacking in the latter stages of the match.

However, to become more of a force over the course of 90mins, I think we need one, or both of these two players to begin to display some sort of consistency in their performances. With reinforcements a near certainty come January, I think both Dempsey and Sigurdsson are at real risk of losing the trust of the Spurs management!

So who is quickest out of Bale, Lennon, or Walker ?
Reckon Bale would lose to the other 2 over a short distance as he needs a few yards to build up speed.

while i can agree all our players are hit and miss i think azza is being treated unfairly,he was there to slot it in at the back post even though downing was daydreaming, thelittle man contributes which is more than some of them, lennon and bale won us the game as they do quite often

our main problem is the hole and spearhead,it doesn’t offer enough for me,thankfully dembele is back ,that should create things,we should probably play with sandro, dembele, defoe and adebayor but not sure if that is what avb wants to do,at home it should be though

it has a bit of a we’ll score more than you feel to it but that is what we do i guess & sandro/Dembele will have to work their knackers off,but they are jsut better players than the others for me,at home it should be too much for the lesser teams to handle anyway

It was a beautiful pass that deserved a matching piece of skill by the forward.

It’s an under used skill, that looks amazing when executed correctly.

He is a very talented boy, we should enjoy him before he goes on to better things.

He seems to be adding more to his game with the Ronaldo type free kicks he has been trying in the last few games with the ball moving all over the place.

His run where he left 4 Liverpool players in his wake before passing to Lennon to score was outstanding.

When he ‘really plays’ there is no one better in his position and he is starting to ‘really play’ a hell of a lot more than he did last season….Could this be down to the manager? Hmmmmm

    Essexian76 Reply:

Well,I was thinking yesterday that when he first came here, he was a free-kick ‘expert’, scored a couple of crackers as I recall, then it all went titties-up, and we ended up watching VDV emulate Johnny Wilkinson for nigh on two seasons-but Bale’s done brilliantly with them, soon he could be Hoddlesque……Mmmmm, perhaps not!

    [Reply]

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

Bale plays better when the field it open. Its not rocket science.
Also he may be looking to move up in the world so either the team rises to that occasion or we will have 50m to figure out how to replace him.
If AVB created the situation that made the field open up in the first half of the liverpool game then it was a lack of good tactics in the second that pinned us down to our own end.For me,if the space is there and Bale is feeling well, the other team is in trouble no matter who manages him.
The key is putting all the pieces together.
The first half we looked fantastic.
The second we were in trouble.
The quality of his set plays is obviously getting better.
I think Bale will not stay long if either AVB’s plan is slow is coming along or the other players dont rise to the occasion.

  • Eyeball Paul Says:

The Eyeballer reckons we would have beaten the Scousers out the door if Adebayor and Defoe were partnered up front last night. There was no composure on the ball especially in the second half.

    What happened Caulker?

The Eyeballer would like to see AVB give Carroll a start in our next home game – this lad has qualities that dempsey or Sigg could only dream off.

That said, Dembele and Dempsey must start against Fulham at the cottage – their familiarity with the surroundings will be a big help…Dempsey to score!!!!!

Eyeball Paul aka The Eyeballer Reply:

The Eyeballer concurs Johns – his assists for Defoe (Maribor) and Bale’s offside goal against the Roman Racists were fantastic. This kind of vision may have enabled us to put Liverpool to bed on Wednesday night. The only reason why the Eyeballer would ‘plumb’ for Dempsey is because we are playing Fulham at the Cottage.

It should be a cracker of a game. That f*cker berbatosser better not score!

No service for Defoe yesterday. He works hard and normally does a good job when he gets the ball at his feet and not when it higher than 4 feet 7 inches.

    Hmmmm….there’s a trend here

Adebayor has to get serious and into the game when he is back.He can supply Defoe and Dempsey is he stocks mucking about.
Having Defoe ahead of Ade in attack makes sense on the ground and Defoe will succeed with that.
For high balls coming in its Adebayor who has to nod it down for Defoe. So where and how they play is going to be really important and its important that we play with two strikers in most if not all games

This is such a typical Tottenham blog. Slate the players who bleed lilywhite. When will we learn? If we totally back the likes of JD, Azza, Dawson and Walker (he signed a contract extention in the summer when he was the hottest youg right back anywhere) we will get even more out of them. JD scored a superb goal on Sunday, slotted a second and has added more to his game. He never wanted to leave, couldn`t wait to come back and continues to do the buisness. We owe him more than he owes us. These type of players are vital, but we being Spurs fans make more fuss of Modric, VDV etc. Think Scholes, Giggs, Gerrard etc. They have received unconditional support and in return given everything for their clubs. We can learn a lesson here. Let`s get firmly behind OUR loyal boys.

I was reading an interview with Ledley King on Goal.com. He thinks we have replaced Modric very well with Dembele. Both players he says are similar to each other in that they can accept the ball under pressure and then effortlessly drift past opposing players. It’s an interesting comparison I think. Just hope he stays fit. I’m going for us to finish 3rd, Chelsea to finish 4th….arsenal top 6. COYS.

Mustn’t use my full nickname. Not politically correct. I. Do think we were outstanding in the first half. Same old the second, although we we are beginning to show a little more resilience. Our usual second half siesta has, I believe, got nothing to do with the manager. It appears to be somewhat ingrained in spurs psychological make up. Maybe there is one of those caveat thingy bobs in every Tottenham players contract, some health and safety stupidity or other. Must have a tea break after an hour’s play. Half time don’t count mate. Our tea break starts after an hour’s play and we’re gonna have it. It’s my right as they say. But seriously, unless that problem is sorted out we are going to keep dropping points when we shouldn’t, and going to get hammered by some of the better sides. AVB is getting it right but levy must back him in the January merry go round.

I’ve thought about Ade in that position too, but I just can’t believe he would have enough midfield running in him. Plus he’s not as capable at finding the occasional last pass when you need him to, as Dempsey did for Bale.
Which brings me to… We need Pjanic in January. Or another player of the creative midfield playmaker type. Who could play as a CAM or holding mid in a 4-2-3-1 or in a 4-3-3. We were simply bereft of midfield creativity during Dembele’s absence. I follow Roma a bit and Pjanic is being completely misused under Zeman’s philosophy. His price tag ain’t bad for his age and resume.
