Good evening.
I’ve been accused of being a Villas-Boas apologist! I guess I can ask for no fairer trial than to ask that any blogs I made demanding Arry’s head after 10 or 11 or 12 games be taken into consideration.
After a day reading and listening to many a Gooner thoughts about Aunty Wenger on tomorrow’s game after years of them achieving Champions League participation I think I’m even less in tune with so many of our two bob fans who want the boss gone if we don’t win tomorrow.
Tomorrow won’t be dull. That’s for sure. I predict a 5-5 all draw.
Provisional Gooner squad: Szczesny, Sagna, Vermaelen, Mertesacker, Santos, Wilshere, Cazorla, Arteta, Coquelin, Podolski, Walcott, Giroud, Mannone, Djourou, Jenkinson, Chamakh, Arshavin, Koscielny, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey.
Provisional lovely boys squad: Friedel, Lloris, Gomes, Cudicini, Walker, Naughton, Gallas, Caulker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Lennon, Sigurdsson, Townsend, Falque, Carroll, Mason, Livermore, Sandro, Huddlestone, Bale, Dempsey, Adebayor, Defoe.

GERRY FRANCIS
Tottenham legend 1994-97 (146 games)
IT has to be the stunning 1-0 win at home on January 2, 1995. It was always going to be special because it was my first as manager which was the most successful reign, over the first 15 games, of any Spurs manager of the previous 5 years. We were playing like Brazil circa 1970 at the time, so we went into it with a certain swagger and confidence that I instilled in all my sides.
My revolutionary management tactics ensured that Gica Popescu scored the only goal and White Hart Lane erupted singing my name in perfect unison. To make it more special, that was the last time Tottenham finished the season as London’s top club.
There are unconfirmed rumours that a stand at the new White Hart Lane is to be named after me.

re. the 5-5 then i’d say you’ve been watching another team cos we dont look like like scoring 5 against the blind school let alone the arse.
if avb’s playing just ade up front then he’ll need around 500 chances to get 5! for goodness sake replace dumpsey with ade and play ade behind defoe. differance last season was we created masses of chances most games which made ade look a hotshot, this season chances are as rare as rocking horse shit so we need a finisher. ade + defoe could be special. cant avb see that?
nobody should call for avb’s sacking if we lose today like i think we will, but if things dont improve soon, and i dont mean just results but the booooring, negative football we’ve been playing even against lowly sides (park the big white bus anyone?) then avb is history for sure, its just when. lets hope levy buys him the players he needs in the next transfer window (preferably ones who understand his tactics) and we get our signficant injured players back soon.

I know a lot of people have been crying out for it, but I don’t really think that the Emirates is the natural home for a 4-4-2 away side. The last team we sent out there like that came away without their pants. But having said that, Dumpsey and Shitterson have looked so poor it might just be a case of f*** the system, just get some half decent footballers on the pitch, whoever they are.
Slender Lloris in goal is an interesting one too. At least Ronnie will be happy.

We have lost this game, just a question of by how many.
We are a 7 man team with Lennon, Bale and Defoe out of it.
AVB has a chance to come up with something to hopefully avoid us getting beaten by a rugby score.

Spot on, this is what the Harry Haters wanted because the grass is always greener apparently. Be nice if some of them were actually big enough to admit they were wrong.
18 games and people are understanding what was obvious after 3. We usually don’t play a system that suits the players.
Ade ruined this game but we should still not concede 3 before half time and 5 in total. We are the only team in the top 11 to have a negative goal difference.
January can’t come quick enough. At least we won’t have to worry about our players getting tired having to play European football as well next season, every cloud has a silver lining, mind you the likes of Bale won’t be here then.
Maybe that’s AVB’s master plan.

Modder’s is a massive loss to us-but let’s not forget-he played in all of shocking performances at the business end of last season. I stil don’t understand why we spent 12m on a keeper, which at best was low priority and not a creative mid, because let’s not forget Huddlestone who playing there, was surplus to requirements in August-so what was plan B?if as has happened, we get a spate of injuries

He made 10 league appearances, probably half of which from the bench. I remember him being played out of position by Redknapp and the fans never accepting him. I also don’t agree that he was ever ‘woeful’. Never on the same planet as Dempsey levels anyway.
And can you argue that he wouldn’t be in the first team atm given our injuries and general squad weakness?

I’d never seen Dempsey play before he came to us, although my dad assured me that he’d be a good addition to the team. I am struggling to understand how someone as bad as him could be in our squad. We don’t look a shadow of the rampaging counter attacking side we were. Its been said many times but we lost real quality and replaced it with mediocrity. Until we inject some proper quality into the team we will not be a top four side.
Very very sad.

We must have bought him from the same lookalike agency we bought that Pienaar clone from. I’d be worried if I was AVB. I saw that axe man glint in Levy’s eye at the end there. Gone by Xmas for my money.

He was top quality for us, keeping the midfield moving, there are players at RM that are better than him because their game has more to it.

Two positives today. AVB got is right and the start and right at half time. Second, Sandro is a beast and our stand out player.
AVB, does however, deserve criticism regarding the lack of reaction in between the sending off and end of first half.
The hope for us is that we have played nearly all of our huge away games and that our injured players are on the way back. Kanoul, dembele and a&e would have been so useful today. (Sandro has more than filled parker’s boots). Our run of games in the next two thirds of the season will be easier with only one trip away tl the big 4

Couldn’t agree more, add to that if Friedel had played we would have lost by at least 3 more. Lloris made 2 fantastic saves and his distribution was excellent, he also came out a few times to save where Friedel would have stayed on his line…

I dont split Friedel or Lloris. I think they are both worthy of being our number 1. I think Lloris releasing quotes through french media is shit though.
If we can slot together a couple of wins and stay in contentiom whilst our first team stops being injured we might be able to recruit some much needed flair in January and push forward.
We are in damage limitation mode atm but that is down to poor luck rather than AVB’s performance.

I mean luck regarding injuries.
AVB is not a brilliant manager but we have few other options. Also judging AVB on an injury ravaged side currently and a side that was rebuilt following the loss of the two best players (earlier in season) is harsh. Moyes is a good manager but paying a huge amount for him now when AVB is not a catastrophe is short sighted.
We are not out of reach of 4th, we have a better run of games coming up and our playmaker should be back soon. Judge him mid february hopefully after we have made a few useful additikns to the squad.

Yeah that dive on the floor in the first half from a corner that thankfully was headed away in front of him, as he would have missed it, was quality as was the pointless punch. He did the same against Maribor. He inspires no confidence at all which is vital for a keeper, Friedel No1.

We continue to be a nervous wreck of a team. We lost one of two front men due to a little stupidity on both Ade and the ref’s part but we still had exactly the same midfield, defence and goalkeeper, all of whom were solid, confident and controlled for the first 20 minutes of the match during which we went ahead.
Why, after losing a striker, did we fall apart as if the defence lost a player and there had been a complete reshuffle? Ronnie Wolman wrote on here after the first 15 minutes of play; “We look strong.Tough.Mentally capable.”, and he was right up to that point. So what happened to the same defence and midfield after the sending off? Granted the arse got the wind behind them but we fell apart! Same performance and score as last time. We have had a fragile & mentally weak-arsed team for far too long now, which hasn’t been properly addressed – Parker and Sandro aside. We are being out organised and mentally bullied by even more sides than the past couple of years and it’s only mid November.
Something tells me AVB may have some talent, but making us a tough to beat side isn’t one of them in spite of that appearing to be a priority. I left the pub at half time; I knew exactly what was coming, I’m a long toothed Spud fan.

We’ve all been anticipating this match, then that guy from Togo had to ruin it! Terribly disappointing, terrible! He’s supposed to help Spurs, not Arsenal. Now we can’t use his skills for the next 3 games. Good job Ade!
I’ve had enough with Huddlestone and Gallas. First 2 goals, both of them were poor. 3rd goal that’s Gallas again. Huddlestone switching off, clumsiness and slowness are too many weaknesses that other players had to compensate for. Gallas was involved in all 3 of Arsenal’s 1st goals. Both of them are off in my book in July and August, period.
Carroll’s been pretty good with his passes and movement, get him on in place of Huddlestone who’s the slowest player in EPL currently. Dawson had been a good leader for us in the past, drop Gallas and sub Michael in.
In the 1st 15 minutes, Vertonghen showed his quality as ball playing centerback, he showed why he should be at the center, where his distribution, composure and passing dictates Spurs play from the back.
Honestly hope Lloris plays in goal from now on.
AVB did well for the 2nd half with 3-5-1. The team gave it a go, although it was too much for Spurs in the end, it’s still pleasing to see.
With the injured players starting to come back next week, it’s light at the end of what has been a long and dark tunnel.

Our defence is really rotten. We have had several games where we’ve looked ‘hard to break down’ for most of the game but then fallen apart sporadically. Very weird. Walker is culpable sometimes, but with Sandro shielding and decent CB’s and keepers we are still very very flaky and fragile.
The only thing I can come up with is a recalling of Dawson to the starting line-up. Him and Vertonghen together may instil a bit of the ‘mental toughness’ we are so lacking. Maybe. Either way I think that Gallas has been a bit shite this year and that the rookie Caulker may need to be eased out of the team and eased back into it occasionally so he can build more experience. Seeing him up against Ibra in the week showed that he isn’t up to dealing with world class strikers just yet – and there are a few of those in the premier league.

these squad shortfalls aren’t avb’s fault, he didn’t sign the useless f*cks in our squad did he?
it’s taken 3 months to get a key forward fit and he’s turned into a liability today, he’s turned into a bad bit of business just like dempsey and jenas mk3

he took the job because it was a chance to restore his reputation and he has no other offers @ 3 million a year basic
who would have turned down a job to manage a top 4 side regardless of player recruitment policy?
did we need a 12 million goalkeeper? did we need sig? I think a goal scorer who can play 1 up front, a replacement for modric and cover on the wings/fullback were more pressing issues

levy appoints the scouts but the change of direction mooted in redknapp’s leaving PR was proof that the manager role at spurs is now to coach players supplied/chosen by the club

From the Grauniad last August:
André Villas-Boas has admitted that a fourth-placed Premier League finish is the minimum requirement from his debut season at Tottenham Hotspur. The manager is keen to stamp his personality on the club, after taking over from Harry Redknapp in the summer, although he has said that he will not push his changes too quickly.
Villas-Boas gave short shrift to the notion that it could be a season of transition; perhaps, as he is mindful that Redknapp was dismissed despite coming in fourth last May. “That’s what was proposed to me and that’s what I accepted,” he said, when asked whether he had to finish in the top four.
———————————
Today, arse passed us in the league, we are 8th, we are now 10 points behind the leaders and dropping fast, we are one of only 2 teams in the top half with a minus goal difference, if the toons beat swansea tomorrow by 3 goals we go 9th, and if fulham beat sunderland on monday we go 10th. We need injured players back urgently, it’s begining to look like more than a blip.
Top 4? I was just getting used to that question not sounding silly.

Is it true that the QPR fans are singing “Harry, come and save us”.

Apparently so. He would be hard-pushed to do worse for them than Hughes. Triffic.

We need to get a sporting director in asap. Remember when we used to sign some half-decent players?

Arsenals midfield contained three players who are effectively box to box players Wiltshire Arteta and Carzola We had a giant in Sandro and Thudd who has great skill but zero mobility Things will be better when our injured players return I’ve been with this club for47 years and I was proud of our efforts on and off the potch

It was a bit of a hotch-potch though, eh? Thought Adebayor made a botch of it to be honest.

our midfield is hopeless at the moment, really you need to control or at least have some influence in the middle, parker, sandro and dembele appears to ahve a bit of everything but no idea how long it will take

I just heard AVB in his post-match interview saying he felt that we were the better team from the “first minute to the last”.
Does that scare the shit out of anyone else or is it just me?

I’d like to personally thank Michael Dawson for that crunching 2nd half tackle on Theo Walcott. It’s reassuring to know we stil have a tall, strong, committted, ball winning centre half…warming the bench!
I’m surprised AVB didn’t play Siggy at center-half, instead, raising the high line a little more while he’s at it…

Andre Villas-Boas had no qualms about the sending off, although he did insist that his side had “controlled the game from the first minute to the last”. He added: “Players want to dispute the ball, there was no intention to do any harm. I think the sending-off determined the game, but the referee made the right decision.
for the spuds fans who said webb favoured arsenal.your own manager said it was a red.

I’m delighted we controlled the game from the first minute to the last, for a moment there I thought we had lost 5-2.

Bit worrying if AvB said/ believes that, it is the type of comment you would expect from whinger.
Seem to recall that aftr we beat their team of placentas 5-1 in the Carling cup, he said they were the better team as they had more possession.
