Good morning.

The Capital One Cup then. The boss’ selection will be interesting given the fact that Manchester United are  lying in wait to pounce Saturday teatime. That said, it is Carlisle. Our opponents are currently 10th in the NPower League 1. To perhaps give you a reference point Orient are 14th in the same division.

The Yanited vs Toon game is the one on the telly here in the UK but it’s difficult to believe our game will be featured anywhere other than on the wireless [clicky].

Last night’s games were a mixed bag. Cheatski battered Wolves 6-0, Swansea beat Crawley Town 2-3, Southampton kept the train a rollin’ with a 2-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday. There were two comedy results of course. Manchester City the current Premier League Champions were beaten at home by European giants Aston Villa. What made my night was West Ham getting walloped by Wigan 1-4. This was gold; Fat Sam’s programme notes told the Primark Posse he felt this was cup they could win.

I won’t bother you with a chalkboard, but I do think this game will see some significant changes. Given it’s Carlisle I would be happy enough to unleash the likes of Cudicini, Dawson, Jenas, Livermor and Huddlestone. I want us to field decent teams in all competitions, but this may well be a mud, blood and guts affair. So at this level we just need everyone we need for the weekend to come home with all their limbs attached.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see this at all but I think Jenas will be picked ahead of Carroll as you Thomas is a bit lightweight. It’s between Gomes and Cudicini between the sticks though, I hear. Apparently Lloris has been left at the Lane for this one.

I can only assume it’s for the reason in this article and that AVB is worried that we’ll get beat up by the league one club.

That said we’ve got enough quality in the squad to win this easily and still put out our first choice team out on Saturday.

My only worry is if Vert plays. Shouldn’t we wrap him up in cotton wool before going to Manchester?

I hadn’t really associated HR with “laziness”, but the more I read from some Spurs players after his sacking, the more I am re-assessing his performance as manager.

Irrespective of his latter period of “England come and get me…” it seems he had no plans for some of the youngsters on our books.

If you send a player out on loan you have to monitor the performances and realise that it’s not solely about cutting the wage budget.

Ryan Mason. Reading between the lines of his recent press statement, he seemed disillusioned under Redknapp. On loan at 20 – 21 but not given a chance on his return.

Surely it’s about resource management. You scout a kid; bring him on to academy level (at high expense); and then send him out for a period of competitive league football.

The player is an asset. He is worth money. The higher level of capability the more valuable he is.

What I cannot understand is Tottenham’s poor record of bringing kids through to first team regularity.

It has to be the man-management skills of the management team. And the buck stops with whomever is in charge over a two to three year period.

I hope and share Ryan’s optimism under AVB – that he will get a proper chance. He’s probably speaking for a few more of our youth.

Sherwood, I think, has a good concept of the loan and progression system – as he displayed with not recommending Kane for another season in the Championship.

We shouldn’t let Sherwood leave for Blackburn. He seems to have a good working relationship with the youngsters and I hope he has the confidence of AVB.

In turn, I’d like to see AVB have confidence in the staff below him.

Spurs shouldn’t be a club merely putting kids through a system and then selling them on without a proper opportunity to perform. And selling them for a pittance at that.

What HR did in last year’s Europa was wrong. Introducing a couple of youngsters to the first team system is not a one-off. It’s a two way commitment.

HR let those kids down. He was lazy and non-focussed.

Levy should have had a word earlier than he did.

Let’s see what happens with the kids under AVB. I’m hopeful…

    [Reply]

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

When you think about it not many of our youth players have been that much cop when we did bring them in from the cold.
Our assessments have rarely been good on finding quality early.
The process is good or not good but the base quality has not been impressive.

    [Reply]

    Bruxie Reply:

We tend to play too many youngsters all at once.

Integrating them gradually…like Cualker has got to be the answer.

Surround them with confidence building team mates and you’ll get a different story.

    [Reply]

    UnkleKev Reply:

Again, this is why Ferguson is such a great manager. He gives his youngsters every chance to prove their worth. Darren Gibson was a semi-regular for two years before Ferguson finally pulled the plug. Likewise it took Jonny Evans that long to demonstrate what he is capable of.

Contrast that with a lot of posters here who are prepared to write off our youngsters after barely ten minutes of action.

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

i havent seen to many youth games lately to know who is really good or not.But from what Ive seem a lot have been overrated.Of course part of it is development but part of it is an inherent quality.
Maybe Caulker has the capability but I havent seen too many that have come out of our ranks (ever) that have been top drawer

    [Reply]

    Bruxie Reply:

    Come off it Ronnie.

Are we the only club with a bad youth production set-up?

Other teams frequently blood youth in more experienced teams.

We throw four or five in at the same time.

    Bad news.

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

Bruxie I really dont know….have many of the players that came up through our academy done anything after leaving us?

    essexian76 Reply:

Players like Kane and Caulker have had to develop their game elsewhere as fans like ours don’t give them a fighting chance. Livermore for example is already Jenas Mk2, without barely having a full season behind him. If our ultimate aim is to finish top 4, then the League Cup and the EL cannot be considered as priority, as they offer no kudos or financial gain

    [Reply]

    LLL Reply:

More to it than that though I think. I don’t think it’s just a case of successive managers thinking, ‘can’t give the young lad a chance, the fans here don’t like that’… It is probably a mixture or poor scouting, poor training, poor development policy and successive managers not really using the youth players in an efficient way. And maybe the fans too, but I couldn’t see that being the number one factor.

A mate of mine’s son just got released from the Spurs academy after a few years on the books (now at a Championship club academy instead). It is very cut-throat. Anyway, the training ideas and methods and general vision has changed a lot in the past couple of years, whether that improves our prospects or not we shall have to wait and see.

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

When someone says ‘Oh he is young’ I immediately think is is shit and will never be good.
    Young Players = Shit
Great players who happen to be young are always great from the off.
Only Jermaine Jenas has a chance to redeem himself over 40
This is all of course a joke but really you can see the quality of players who ‘have it’ the rest are just worker ants who might get a bit better or a bit worse with coaching.
A good scout will surely find the pearls. But we are in the retail business not the wholesale or manufacturing business

    LLL Reply:

Bottom line is also that we aren’t especially bad, most PL clubs are made up of imports from other countries and other academies.

The reason is because we don’t have the system in place to properly develop kids. On the continent, it’s not uncommon for an academy to be the only place a kid will go for both their education and football. This is really important as it gets them playing a few hours of football every single day – they will go to maths class, have an hour of football, go to science etc etc. Research proves that to become an expert at something you need to practice 3 hours a day for 10 years – equalling 10,000 hours practice total. At Spurs and most English academies, they see the kids for about 5 hours a week outside school hours and they play a game on Sunday morning. Is it any wonder that England in general is so far behind most other countries in terms of youth development?

    Ronnie Wolman Reply:

I can see harry Redknapp running that organization.
‘Ok cheif you get a saturday morning at Petticoat lane, sell a little gear then a night of driving a taxi around kings cross and then you can start’

    UnkleKev Reply:

I think that, in much the same way as we loan players out to other clubs, we should be able to loan managers too. Sherwood to Blackburn on loan seems a good idea to me. Sherwood to Blackburn on a permanent basis is most definitely a no-no however.

i’d play Lloris at old trafford personally,we need someone mobile at utd if you ask me,

i was looking at who had the rights to capital one games earlier to see if there was a chance of a stream and it said the BBC does not have one live football game this season, pretty sad really seeing as it is supposed to represent the whole nation with its bundles of tax, couldn’t they even grab a ropa dopa game,it says BT have nicked ESPN prem games from next season too

I actually thought the BBC guy had money on Carlisle the way they reacted to our first goal.

They got so fed up when we scored a second and they wouldn’t be able to talk about ‘AVB being under pressure’ that they buggered off to the Liverpool game.

Don’t you believe it. BBC report still manages to get in a swipe, saying Carlisle could have equalised before we got the second.

If they can’t dig us out about the football, they’ll turn on something else. Tomorrow’s headlines will all be about ‘crisis talks with Lloris loom as French No.1 doesn’t even make the bench’.

A few people mentioned it earlier but the commentary by tango man & his sidekick on Radio 5 was pretty ridiculous. I’ve never heard a radio commentator sound so deflated in a supposedly ‘neutral’ game.

They got so annoyed when we got the second they almost said ‘This is pointless waiting for Spurs to get knocked out, so we’re going to the Hawthorns to hopefully kick Brendan Rodgers’.

When you apply for a job in the British media do you have to take some kind of test to prove how much of a twat you can be?

Go on the Spurs site, you may get tickets offered by season ticket holders who cannot attend.
I clicked on the site a couple of weeks ago and there were 2 whole blocks of seats for sale in the Lower Park Lane for sale for the QPR game.
I got 3 at £37 each and I assume they became available as QPR could not sell them.
So it is worth checking the site frequently.
