Good afternoon.
Ryan ‘Half’ Nelson then. 34 years of age and the burning question of the day has to be, ‘ eh? ‘ Easy I guess to knock him. Let’s face it, many of us didn’t see PNB working, but this strikes me as ambitious beyond belief.
Bassong on loan I get. He’s worth pursuing to see if his potential can ‘unlocked’. That makes sense. But to replace him with an injury prone gentleman… don’t we already have those spots covered?
I managed to find this radio interview with 3News.co.nz Which you can hear HERE.

just a precaution in case all our defenders get injured. I doubt he’ll start many, if any games. I suppose it does him a favour as his contract was terminated by BR, and it does us a favour as we’ve loaned Bassong out.

I think HR sees him doing the same job he had in mind for Neville last year – ie not adding much to the squad technically but definitely a good bloke to have alongside you in the trenches come squeaky bum time. And – with the wonderful benefit of hindsight – it could be argued that Neville might just have made the difference as we went off the boil last season. A core of hardened campaigners alongside the young talent has been Manure’s recipe for success all these years.

After re-filling my half empty glass back to the brim, I’m thinking of this as a short term answer to a longer term question. We’re in a good position and an awfully long way in front of Liverpoop and the Goon’s. We’ve got rid of another load of deadwood, and bought in experienced and hopefully hungry players looking for a last hurrah. If we reach the CL by getting 3rd, it’ll be a good season, and we’d have outed a few players who wouldn’t figure anyway in preparation for the coming season, when we can spend good money on better players-Geeze, I hope I’m right, as we’re forgetting we’ve got Huddlestone, Gallas and also Bentley (!!!), to come back into the fold as well.

Interesting to see Bentley has been named in the 25 man PL squad for the rest of the season. Must mean he is potentially able to kick a ball before April. A fit and focused Bentley could still have a role to play, especially if Azza keeps going lame. He would at least keep the shape of the midfield better than sticking one of the central boys out on the right.
‘Arry’s failure to get anything out of him has always puzzled me. You would have thought he was perfect for the Redknapp ‘bring me your troubled souls and I will turn them into footballers’ treatment. They even speak the same language!

You might want to reconsider the status of your glass. Just seen the 25 man squad announced, and it includes Bentley, who was told he was not part of HR’s plans, and Khumalo.
Bentley had trouble getting into the Brum team last season, and Khumalo can’t even get into the Reading team. You’ve already read about Nelsen’s probs, and added to the squad is Simon Dawkins, whom we released after knee probs, re-signed, loaned to an MLS side, and most recently was turned down on a free by Twente, after a trial.
All of a sudden, I am saying to myself, can these really be squad players in a team that is challenging for the double?

nelson – talented player at his peak but 34 years old, extremely injury prone and hasn’t played 90 mins for 8 months
positives – pienaar (J**** mk 11) gone makes space for krankie, hudds nearly fit, sandros back

Apart from offing the Russian, couldn’t agree more.
There was an air of apathy around the transfer window. It’s as though people are now trying to convince themselves (and others) that the window was actually a success.

levy’s approach to our transfer business rarely bears fruit, our success this season only occurred because he finally listened to the manager, we’re so close but could easily end up out of the top 5 within a month if key players don’t stay fit.
Out of interest when has approaching clubs with low ball offers for their best players with a few hours to go ever paid off?
only seems to work when the other club owes us a lot of money

Not sure I believe the offer was made but if it was, was it before or after the player had already said he had no intention of moving in this window ?
To be honest, if I am Levy and thinking I may need a new manager next week, I am not convinced I would have splashed the cash in this window.
We need to hope we are lucky with injuries and suspensions over the next 4 months.

The offer was leaked by the Frogs. If you are trying to suggest that DL made an offer for a player that he knew was unavailable, that does take some believing. Besides which, footballers are not renowned for their honesty, or for refusing to change their minds after they received an offer.
If the whole idea is to put in “phoney bids” to con the supporters into thinking they are doing something special, there were other much higher profile players they could have latched onto.

Perhaps I am being too cynical.
The truth is, none of us really know what is going on but there is a lot of spin by the clubs, players and agents.
Anyway, we are where we are and I am quite looking forward to seeing if Saha can make a difference.
He has got to be a better bet than Henry, who is supposed to be on £150,000 a week which must make him the Worlds most expensive cheer leader.

All joking aside, it was a terrible window but I’ve a feeling that it’s as much to do with consolidation and clearing the decks, than one of pushing for players that were unattainable. If Blackburn said no deal over Samba for example, why then go for an inferior player at double the price? Equally, if we’ve set our stall out for Leandro, why then just get A N Other in on a long term, expensive deal and snooker ourselves for any summer transfers? Sort of makes sense, cheers ( tops up glass…again)

I recall the window last Jan, and the number of posters who were cursing DL for not having bought, Torres/Suarez/Carrol or any combination of these.
This time around, when you look at the window and see that Pav was one of the biggest names to move, it is difficult to curse anybody.
I think we are beginning to see some realism coming into the game. The money is from the top down, and when teams like Manure/Shitty/Cheatski are no longer buying £40 mill plus players because of FFPR, it trickles down all the way to the bottom.
I always felt that the reason Cheatski only offered £22 mill for Lucre at the beginning, was that they were told that it doesn’t matter how much the Russki has, if he wants to win the CL, he has to be in the comp first, and FFPR was to be taken seriously or he couldn’t compete.
Similarly, with Mansour, Mancini is telling him the squad isn’t strong enough, but if he goes out and spends another £50 mill, he wont qualify for the CL.
Not having access to the figures, my guess is that in order to make a profit, they will have to take drastic action unless they can win four trophies a season. I think they usually have about 4,000 empty seats per game. Assuming the increased their prices by £20 per seat, and played to full houses for 25 games a year, that increases income by £30 mill, but they lost £194 mill last year, and we all know that you won’t find many takers for an extra £20 per match.
Both Cheatski and Shitty appear to have “shot their bolt” financially. Arse look like they are not going to be in the CL next season. Same for the scousers for the third year running.
If my guess is correct, we only need to qualify for the CL for the next couple of seasons until the NDP is finished and we could be semi-permanent fixtures there for years to come. All thanks to FFPR.

I don’t think we have the money as it was rumoured Krasic wanted a perm deal and we just couldn’t afford it,which makes you wonder even if we qualify for the CL whether we can afford to hold on to Bale Modric or either of them?

SpurredoninDublin Reply:

If the worst comes to the worst, they are both under contract for several years. Then again, I haven’t heard Bale say that he wants to leave, and if you agree with my last post, you will see that there are very few teams in the world who could afford to buy Modric without letting decent players go.
I meant to add to my last post that if Shitty were to add £20 to a ticket, the £30 mill this might raise pays the wages of three £200k a week players. I don’t see that the Shitty model is sustainable.

My major concern to Fair play, is simply that I cannot see Barca,Real or the top Italian’s being booted out of the CL for any transgression of the rules. I trust UEFA as much as I do FIFA, but if it were an English club that flouted the rules-they’d be out like a shot!
SpurredoninDublin Reply:
February 3rd, 2012 at 1:13 am
Not sure why you are so suspicious, but I think Uefa needs the English Clubs more than anybody country.
If you travel around East Asia on a CL night, the games that are being advertised in the bars, are the PL teams games. The sponsors money depends on TV audiences, and once you start clamping down on PL teams, so that (e.g.) Stoke finish eighth and qualify because of FFPR, the TV audiences will shrink drastically. If you think that UEFA will show favouritism, it is more likely to be to keep the Sky 4 (the brand leaders) in situ at the expense of teams with smaller followings.
It’s not just the CL that attracts the audiences world wide. At weekends, most of the sportsbars are capable of showing games from all the major Euro leagues, but the majority of games being advertised are PL. I have been in bars with five different screens, and a different PL game on each of them.
If there is a conspiracy, it will be to keep all the crowd pullers in, and not to clamp down on the English only because once the English are out of the comp, the viewing audiences go down.

Saha is to us what a milf is to a teenage boy. Not someone you marry but u’ll have caus you can’t stop yourself.. Or something. Anyway, bad analogies aside, we have possibly taken a little gamble but with thud coming back and krankie looking like a player again.. The players who have left are no real loss. Pav wasn’t even getting a game. I don’t really know what the fuss is about? We did actually go for Remy if those reports are true so its not for lack of trying. If that is true then levy still backs purchases even if harry ends up in the slammer or goes for england. Don’t think levy is concerned about that. He’s not having a great deal of success there. His record is 3-1-4. In other sports, managers who don’t have a 50% win rate are usually shown the door quickly. Looking at his stats, this is the only time he has been below the 50% mark. Apparently though, he does like living in US. Perhaps some of our US contributors might speculate if his job is under threat.

We are 5/2 against, at The Poo, and 12/5 the draw. I like those odds, I sure we can do them again.

Can someone clarify for me, was it Private Ryan or Admiral Nelsen we signed, or does he get promoted/demoted depending on his match performance.

Saha is quality, will bang in the goals.
Nelsen is experienced and professional.
Both have proven to be solid performers in the Premier League…. Unlike some of the ridiculous names thrown about that we could have signed for £15m+
